Rooflights for a music studio - any successes?

Rooflights for a music studio - any successes?

Post by Hagopm »

I am planning a music studio build at the end of my garden. Full details are in a previous post of mine. Construction will be ICF with a concrete beam and block roof. Moving inwards a 50-100mm air gap. The interior will be fitted with a timber stud frame insulated with 150mm - 200mm Rockwool buildup.

The only entry and natural light to the building will be via a set of sliding doors, one fitted to the exterior structure, one to the interior sound isolating frame.

I would really like to have two non-opening rooflights as I am a big fan of natural light. I have been advised by a number of experts against this. However I cannot help going back to the idea in my mind. I would not mind installing multiple planes of different thicknesses of glass to get to the required sound isolation and airtightness.

Has anyone successfully fitted rooflights to their music studio? If so would you be so good as to share sections drawings to show your construction detail?

Thanks.

Just remember, the same isolation principle applies to windows as it does walls. Two very heavy pieces of mass with a spring (air) between them. So, use a single pane piece of glass that is VERY thick and laminated for each and treat them like a normal studio window. That's how I would do it.

It appears that you've made the mistake most people do. You started building without consulting this forum.

Thanks Gregwor. I guess the silence on this thread speaks volumes!
