Door Jamb Leakage

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Door Jamb Leakage

Post by mrtomcat »

I am pretty much done with my dum room and have seen some very good results in some very basic testing but ran into an issue that I haven't quite figured out yet...

I have a two door system, one on the first leaf inside the room and one of the second leaf outside the room, I beefed them up and they seem to be doing a decent job however there was a bit more room in the rough openings than anticipated and there are is still some leakage where the shims went.
I added additional wood, backing rods, door foam and acoustical caulk. It is sealed (visually) but it's still leaking sound. It's about a 3/4" area.
What else can I do? Should I put drywall compound in there or more Acoustical caulk, or something else?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Clearly there's some gap inside there someplace that didn't get filled, so your only real option here is to dig out whatever is in that area, and a couple of inches either side, to find out what the problem is, then fix it. Probably somthing didn't get filled that you though had been filled. Maybe a gap in the backer rod, or the caulk, or some such.

It's "small" issues like this that rob you of the isolation you tried so hard to create. Tiny gaps can have major consequences. So if you do want top isolation, unfortunately you'll have to go hunting, excavating deep to find the issue.
