My wife changed her mind

Post by RickLee »

I've been building a "she shed" little cottage for my wife to do her sewing projects and two days ago she said. "You know, why don't you move your music stuff out there and I'll make my sewing room in your old space!"

So, I'm going to make it into a practice space and I would like a little input into trying to make it a moderately musical sounding space. It's way too late to make any big changes. Not concerned about leakage. There's plenty of space between us and the neighbors and I don't play very loud. Door and windows are in. Recording would be "for fun" and rarely if ever more than two musicians playing at the same time.

It's 15.5 ft. x 11.5 ft. and 11.5 ft. high. It'll have a drum set and guitar amp and a desk for my computer. Also gonna put in a little sleeping loft on the windowless side. Using a minisplit wall mounted unit for cooling and heat. Would like to get it finished in the next two weeks.

Here's where I'm at:

Budget to finish is about $1000. I was going to put 1/2" foam down on the floor and cheap laminate flooring over that. I have 3/4" x 6" x 6' long wood slats for the ceiling. Current insulation going in is unfaced 4" thick fiberglass. Was going to drywall the two side walls and the front wall and put wood slats on the back wall.

I know this is like putting lipstick on a pig but it's a better space than where my drums are set up now.

Again the goal: Making the space fairly musical sounding.

I was thinking of setting the drums up underneath the loft (which will come out about six feet) with sound absorption on the two walls behind the drums. Loft will be about 5.5' up.

Would it help to put up a double wall on the back tall side with wood slats on the front for additional absorption?

As you can see it's built like a shed with piers underneath the floor.

Thanks, Rick
