Studio in Moscow, build diary

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Studio in Moscow, build diary

Post by burst »

So we started our construction couple of days ago. I don't have enough time post my plans here, but here's the link to my early design for our place http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... =1&t=17536

We spend last couple of days cleaning the place, cutting huge vents and filling holes in the floor. Here's what we have:

And here is how we made a doorway to our studio and cut piping:

Drywall!!! 150 sheets. And there is also 40 sheets of CBPB, not pictured

And here is how we made a doorway to our studio and cut piping:
 :!: Is that a load-bearing (structural) wall??? If so, then you should have placed a suitable lintel (door header) above the top of the rough door frame BEFORE you started knocking out bricks.

No man, it's fine, not a structural wall and it's not one deep wall, it's basically two brick walls, half-brick deep each, between two more massive brick columns. Opening between them is just about 1m, and we consulted with local engineer, he told us it's fine to use just a wood frame out of 2x4 on each opening after we break trough.

Meanwhile, we finished our cleaning and started to build walls of CR, which are made of one layer of CBPB plus two layers of 1/2 drywall. The walls turned out SUPER HEAVY, it took ten people to lift the long one, weighting whooping 980 kg! Also, we've noticed that walls look way smaller when laying on the floor. When you lift them, the look huge

Stuart once posted a link in my thread regarding wall jacks.
http://www.industrialladder.com/listPro ... goryID=368
I couldn't use them in my case due to room geometry, but they might be just the ticket in your case. Perhaps you can even rent them?

Yes, I'm aware about wall jacks, but unfortunately, my country was so busy trying to achieve communism that it forgot to to make a single wall jack. No drywall lifts either :horse:

Hey, so progress so far is that we've build all walls of CR and one of LR:

I want to ask you guys about "ghetto floating floor", I recall that I saw it on the forum, but can't find it now...
Will this plan work?
floor.jpg
So basically it's 1 or 2 layers of high density rockwool (125kg/m3) plus 2 layers of 12mm plywood plus hard wood flooring. And this all made with air gap across perimeter. Will that give me some more isolation in CR if I do it in my live room? Or am I only wasting time/money?

I'd suggest a thicker plywood.

Perhaps you are refering to http://johnlsayers.com/Recmanual/Pages/Floors.htm
or perhaps to Rod Gervais' book (which I don't have access to at the moment) which outlines a scheme similar to the one you show.

I was thinking that I saw it somewhere in the Rod's book, but can't find it there either, but I'll eventually find it again :) The main difference between this plan and John's manual is the absence of wood joists on neoprene under plywood/hardwood assembly. So, as I get it, I'm creating heavy surface and lay it on rockwool that damps vibrations, thus reducing structural noises. And, to reduce resonance frequency of that surface I need to make it as heavy as I can. Am I right on that? If so, maybe it's better to make it from CBFB (cement fiber board), like I did on the walls, because it's same price here, but almost double the weight?

Meanwhile, we've build some more pieces of live room:

Yes, the floor description you mention is in Rod's book - not having it at hand, I can't tell you which page (I have the 2nd edition) just at the moment - but persevere, it is there.

The build is progressing well. Are those wall sections being anchored to the floor? Are they resting on any kind of matting or other kind of underlay to allow for small unevenness of the floor?

Hey Brian, thanks! No, I was thinking we'll just caulk the line where wall meet floor and then I'll pour self-leveling concrete compound along perimeter to seal it off completely.

Meanwhile, we've almost done with live room walls and vocal booth, a day or two and we'll stard the most scary part - ceiling :| :

Hey hey, I've been on week-long vacation in Saint-Petersburg with my awesome wife, but now we're back so the build continues! By the way, she helps a lot and visiting construction site every day, so it's family business now :D

So, we've finished vocal booth and LR wall and started LR ceiling and did most of it, turned out not as hard as I was expecting it to be, seems easier than just attaching drywall from below.

Hey, thanks stk! Indeed, that's one massive build, hope it'll turn out well.

So, I was kinda low on updates lately, but here's whats done by now:

We've build control room ceiling:
IMG_0554.jpg
IMG_0555.jpg
IMG_0556.jpg
Then, we started to build superchunks and slat resonators:
IMG_0558.jpg
IMG_0559.jpg
Then we've put fabric on ceiling and put hangers in place. I've decided not to fill cavities between ceiling rafters with rockwool because we'll have two big clouds.
IMG_0563.jpg
IMG_0565.jpg
Then, we've began to put slats in place:

So, here is what we have right now, please let me know if we're doing something wrong :)

Hey, I found this dead topic and want to shed some light on this project! IT WAS FINISHED long time ago

Nowadays this place is known as DTH Studios' Studio A. The construction was finished in mid-2013 and took almost a year (it's actually me standing in Burst's photos in yellow tshirt  ). We are running this thing for almost 4 years now, making records everyday, working on great pieces of gear with wonderful artists and enjoying every minute spent inside these walls.

Damn, It's hard to believe how powerful human mind can be. This studio were born from a sketch, from nothing, with no investments, driven by pure enthusiasm and DIY, and now I look at these old pictures and feel so proud that we made it. The work was huge, but the result is huge too. Rooms sound great and isolation between them is more than good (only light bass rumble feels on the floor in CR when whole band is performing in LR) In fact, doors are the weakest spot, not the walls. Still got some air-conditioning issues to work with, but other than that everything is beautiful.

I pin some pics and videos to show you how it looks in 2017!

Here's the website: DTH Studios where you can get more info about our community :!:
