Re: Yet Another Ground Up Backyard Studio (drums) Plan B

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Re: Yet Another Ground Up Backyard Studio (drums) Plan B

After having the errors in my first plan exposed I decided to scrap it and start over.
This revised Plan B is simple and hopefully less expensive than my first Idea.

Budget. Would like to keep to $85k-100k. The Cement and dig alone are about 18k, Permit 5-7k .5k, Admin (architect, design, structural engineer etc) 4.5k AC 9k
so I have about 47k-57k for the Walls, Insulation, Roof, flooring, G Glue, Electrical etc. I know that is tight Especially if I was to hire a GC.

There is a current 12x16x13 building to remain being used as a CR. I have contacted a local consultant to help me with reworking this room.

The new structure will be slab on grade 23'4"x40'x18'6" with a Gable Roof.

The purpose is to have large drum recording room along with enough room to track with 3-4 people that reduces the noise level by 65db
Drums/gear needs to have easy access to loading out to the north of the proposed building for gigs etc. This is stored in the room 2 Booth on the North east side of the building.
I am trying to make this design as simple as possible with 3 new rooms.
1 Large Tracking 28x21'5"x17'11"h http://amroc.andymel.eu/?l=28&w=21.5&h= ... ue&r60=0.6
1 Large booth, storage 15"6"x9"2"x12'h http://amroc.andymel.eu/?l=15.6&w=9.2&h ... ue&r60=0.6
1 mud room, airlock, air exchanger room, amp lockout 9'5"x5'x12'h
16MCR details2 for v4(2).pdf
Storage is important. I want to put storage above the booth. I am not as concerned with the booth being entirely decoupled from the main room but want the main recording space decoupled from the building structure. This current design gets me 5'3" of storage over rooms 2 Booth and 3 Lockout. Any advice here?

I realize there is an error in the E-W building section connecting the ceiling of room 2 (Booth and lockout) to the outer wall. That is incorrect.

The house is south of the 2 structures where bathrooms and the kitchen are. Having an easy walk is important. There is no chance of putting a bathroom out there as water hookups are $17,000.00

I am loud. 105 db. Drums etc. Would like to play later into the night so isolation is important. The typical outside noise is 40-45db. I am 105 inside. I was looking to reduce noise by 65db

The smaller structure (Current Control Room) would be wired with cameras and audio. It will remain the CR and a new large live room with a booth will be built next door on a separate foundation. I can not connect the buildings per city code issues. There will be 6" between the buildings.

The problems are that the room has poor AC and a high noise floor. It was never built out correctly but it does live on it's own slab. The outside has metal siding and sheathing underneath. I was planning on removing the metal siding and adding hardieplank siding to add mass to the outside wall. I plan to redo this room and add a minisplit system.

The proposed construction is Slab on Grade with 2x6 for the outside. I was thinking double sheathing and hardie cement board for the siding. 18ft walls. Truss roof. then 2 in space and 2x4 inner walls with double 5/8 and green glue.

Ceiling would be under the trusses 1 inch. see diagram

The proposed building has a live room that is 28x21.5x17.5

The Booth is 9.2"x 15.2"x 12 high. I want to use the ceiling from the booth to store drum kits and other studio equipment boxes etc.

Floors will be wood on some kind of backing on slab.

Cable runs will be routed in pvc under the main wall through the slab.

Electrical will be run in conduit on the drywall. Some of the new Electrical will be rerouted into the existing building to use the same circuits.

Trouble spots:
AC I am looking to use Mitsubishi Mini splits with fresh air venting. 1 2ton system in the CR and 1 3ton system for the new building with 3 heads I want to put an air exchanger in room 3 Lockout for fresh air. Where to I run the vents to avoid noise transfer?
I am looking to run the piping in from under the building in PVC to avoid holes in the outside. Will there be noise problems from sound of the refrigerant in the lines? Should I make a larger airgap between the walls and use that "airspace" to run the Minisplit lines?

Questions:
1 Should I have a 2" airspace between the wall systems vs a 1" gap? (Trying to help minimize low end)
2 Should I nix the resilient channel because it is a 2 leaf wall system all around the building? Rods book says channel will not help a 2 leaf system. pg 71
3 Is there any reason to have resilient channel in the ceiling?
4 How do we support the ceiling from the inside structure so there is no need for clips hanging from the trusses? Would and inside layer of sheathing help create this stability? Would 2x4's carry a layer of sheathing plus 2 layers of drywall? Architects like to connect things so they do not sag.

5 Should I add outside hardieplank siding to the existing CR 12x16 building to add mass? Should I add 1 layer of sheathing and then hardieplank for more mass? There currently is 1 layer of sheathing.
6 Can I make a mitsubishi minisplit work with fresh air venting in the new building using air exchanger in room 3?
7 I am curious if the ceiling detail is right? There is a sheet of drywall under the trusses to hold insulation. Does this create a triple leaf system? Will this be a problem? Is there another material to hold the insulation in place?
8 Should we use wood or metal studs?
9 I am curious what to do as a finish at the door entry's between the 2 walls so I do not couple them. (Shoe Mold) in WALL PLAN DETAIL
10 How do we put in required firestops between the two wall leafs without coupling them?
Should there be 2 doors on each wall at every opening?
11. I understand the french door to room 3 might not be the best choice. Should I look at a 36" site built door with glass instead?

P.s. I have sent PM's but have received no responses so am starting a new post.

Thanks for all of your help!

I did reply to your original thread: Maybe you didn't see that?

There's no need to start a new thread when we are still talking about the same studio.
