Inner leaf design

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Inner leaf design

Post by DavidC77 »

Appreciate some advice on the best construction design for the inner leaf of a room-within-a-room design.

I have looked through the forum but can't find a clear consensus whether I should use 2 layers of 13mm "gyprock soundcheck" drywall with a layer of green glue in between, or whether it would be better to replace one of the layers of drywall with a 19mm tongue and groove particleboard (such as yellow tongue structaflor)

Any thoughts on which might achieve better isolation?

Thanks :thu:

I've been trawling though the specs of each option overnight.

The 19mm tongue and groove comes in at a listed density of 680kg/m3 (http://www.chhwoodproducts.com.au/UserF ... Manual.pdf), or 12.92kg/m2 for the 19mm variety (if my math is holding up).

The gyprock soundcheck 13mm is listed at 13kg/m2 (http://www.gyprock.com.au/Lists/Product ... asheet.pdf), which my math brings to 1000kg/m3 density. (Hope I have done all that correctly :? )

I know there are property differences, but from this it seems to me that there is little difference between the two as far as end result goes.

Any thoughts for or against, or experiences in using one method or the other?

Thanks again :thu:

I would go with the two layers of drywall plus GG. However, I would use 2 x 16mm drywall, rather than 2x13mm. Higher mass.

The issue with the T&G wood is: how do you seal the joints between boards? And how do you maintain the surface density? I guess as long as you get all the joints perfectly centered over studs, and caulked them somehow, you would be OK. But you'd be in unknown territory as far as isolation goes. You'd become your very own acoustic test laboratory. Since nobody else seems to have tested this in a proper lab, the results are not really predictable. Yes, the mass is similar to drywall, but what about porosity? rigidity? Resonant frequency? Where would the coincidence dip be? Is that even important? Mass is one of the major points, but not the only one.

Thanks for your reply Stuart - always appreciate your input.

Will definitely go for the drywall, but just with regard to the 13mm Soundchek Vs 16mm Fyrchek, the 13mm actually has the higher density as it has been designed for soundproofing purposes (more highly compressed during manufacturing). The 13mm comes in at 13kg/m2, and the 16mm is 12.55kg/m2.

13mm Soundcheck: http://www.gyprock.com.au/Lists/Product ... asheet.pdf
16mm Fyrchek: http://www.gyprock.com.au/Lists/Product ... asheet.pdf

Cheers
