Info needed on Door hinges

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Info needed on Door hinges

Post by wiz1der »

Hello All,

I am in the process of sourcing some door hinges, and running into some confusion.

A little bit about my framing:

staggered studs on 2x6 plates
2 king studs and 2 jack studs on each side of door opening, and 2x6 header.
5/4 hardwood jamb
The drywall on the outside of the framing (will be) equal to 1 3/4" (1/2 drywall sandwiched by 5/8 drywall)

The door will be 2 1-3/8" Solid Core doors glued together with either 3/4" or 1" mdf in between, making the door 3-1/2 to 3-3/4" thick!

I am aware this door will be thick and HEAVY, and will be going with bearing hinges, but it is the thickness of my drywall outer layer that is throwing me for a loop. I would think that for good iso from the door, that it will need to be set deep in the jamb ( at least past the 1 3/4" drywall), and also to be able to screw into the jack studs (and not the drywall).

So I was looking for hinges, you tubing for info etc, and saw some 4-1/2 x 6 ( or 7), that would definitely get the screws into the studs, but when I picture a 3-1/2" door set at least 1-3/4" deep, it seems to me that the "throw" of the hinge would not allow the door to open, as the wideness of the hinge would make the door hit the frame instead of opening outwards quick enough.

Hopefully I have stated the question clear enough...

If I am approaching this all wrong, please let me know. I have searched here and have browsed through countless door and build threads, and could not find anything.

Thanks!

The offset door hinge would satisfy the throw issue. Now if you can get them with the correct amount of knuckles to support this door or not is a whole nother issue.
