Acoustic panels ?

Post by Snyderman »

I posted a question a few months ago and am ready to follow up on some acoustic improvements.

I am doing a bunch of cello overbubbing projects in my home studio. The room seems to be fairly nice but I am interested in the difference that some treatment would make. I have found that sitting with my back to the fireplace playing to the top right corner of the room sounds nice.

Ethan mentioned taking away the 6' x 10' area rug which is fine but things seemed a bit boomy when I tried that. What sort of treatment should I add to the ceiling?

I have heavy curtains over the french doors near the desk and over the opening at bottom of the room.

I like the idea of building some 'Winer' panels. Is there a particular design that I should be looking for? Is it bass traps that I may improve things?

(I can post an audio sample or two on a web site if that would help to hear my situaltion. It's cello music by Dave Brubeck & Piazzolla.)

Thanks for any help.
Derek

PS nice concerto Ethan!

Derek,

I'd add broadband absorption to the ceiling, and especially in the corners. These are two separate issues. One is repetitive echoes between the floor and ceiling, and the other is the boominess you get in any room when there's no bass trapping. I assume you've seen my Acoustics FAQ, yes? That shows how to place rigid fiberglass panels across the room corners. Then cover at least 50 percent of the ceiling with absorption.

Yes, please post. I don't care about your acoustic problems nearly as much as I'd like to hear your playing. :D

Thanks!

Thanks Ethan,

"I assume you've seen my Acoustics FAQ, yes"

Yes & thanks for having it!

Here is a link to check out one of the tunes I'm working on. (Just added the page so hope it works). I recorded this with a Studio Projects T3 tube mic and the pre build into my Digi002 and then into Protools. There is a small amount of reverb added. Any thoughts you or anyone would like share are more than welcome. I'm now experimenting with mixing the sound of an Earthworks omni with the tube mic.

I'm now looking for some thick 703 or 705 in the Cleveland or Ann Arbor area as it seems that this will act as the base for my treatment.

Thanks for the help.
Derek

BTW are you familiar with Stephan Katz? He's a great cellist and creative musicain that I met last weekend. He lives in your general neck of the woods. As does Brubeck. Take care.

Fabulous. Great playing!

Sure, I know Steven and I've heard him play many times. I used to go to all the New Directions Cello festivals until they stopped having them near me. Do you know New Directions? It's a very cool group with lots of resources for people with your exact interests. Here's their site:
