Room modes in a Mixing Rom with soffit-mounted speakers

Post by FriFlo »

My question is quick goes like this: what dimensions do you use to calculate the supposed room modes in a room, where part of it has been separated by the soffit mount?
I would like to estimate, where the room modes measured by REW come from, to find out which place of the room needs further treatment. So, I guess a room mode calculator would be good help. But the room isn't perfectly cubic any more, so I am not sure, wether those models are still close enough to the real situation and which dimensions to input.
I tried the dimensions of the room without the soffit built in, but that seems to differ quite a lot from the measurements.

You can use the location of the new baffle surface of the soffit for that, but you need to take an average or measure in the middle (because the soffit face is angled), and the results won't be very accurate. They should still be good enough to get a rough idea, though.

Don't forget that there's a lot more going on in the room than just modes! There is also the issue of SBIR from the back and side walls, reflections, comb filtering, and other things. Soffits eliminate those artifacts from the front wall, and to a certain extent from the side walls, but the other walls are still there. So what you see on REW is not just modal: there's likely to be many things going on, some of which are easy to identify, others not so easy.

Thanks for the reply, Stuart!

With huge parts of my soffit wall still being open (the place where I will place two slot resonators) in terms of room modes, I actually have two rooms in one, depending on the frequency, right?
So, for the room mode part, I will only be able to measure the final result, once the front wall is entirely closed (with the exception of the openings to the bass hangars and loose insulation behind the speaker wall. Then, the modes will apply approximately to the average of the the room dimensions within the speaker wall.

Regarding SBIR and all kinds of reflection problems: Slat resonators designed the right way and absorbers on the side walls should deal with them the same way. I t would be great, if you could take a look at my studio design thread and help me solve the last puzzles! :-)
