Suggested insulation product help limited in my area

Post by David17 »

This is crazy. I need to make 4 bass traps this week.
I have a home depot and a lowes near by and neither have Owens 703 or Rockwool available. Out of stock online but I don't have 3 weeks to wait for them to deliver or pay for the extra shipping.
I have Johns Manville products like the typical r 19 and up and also owens corning lower models.
Any ideas what might be useable for a super chunk bass trap?
Thanx for any ideas guys!!

Anything made from mineral wool that has a density of around 50 kg/m3 (general ballpark), or anything made from fiberglass that has a density of around 30 kg/m3 (ballpark) would probably work. If you have a choice of one that is too heavy or another that is to light, go with the lighter one.

50 kg/m3 = 3 lbs/ft3
30 kg/m3 = 2 lbs/ft3

Stuart. Does 30 kgs mean an r value of 30?
Thank you

No. Like I said, it is the physical DENSITY we are talking about, not the thermal properties. 30 kg/m3 means that it has a density of 30 kilograms per cubic meter, which implies that if you had a container that measures exactly one meter long by one meter wide by one meter high, and you fill it with 30 kg/m3 insulation, then the amount of insulation that exactly fills the container would weigh 30 kilograms.

As I also pointed out, 30 kilograms per cubic meter is approximately the same as 2 pounds per cubic foot (also written "2 PCF"), measured in old imperial units. Meaning that if you had a container that measures exactly one foot long by one foot wide by one foot high, and fill it with 2 PCF insulation, then that amount of insulation would weigh 2 pounds.

Its the same density in both cases, just two different ways of measuring it. (actually 30 kg/m3 is 1.873 PCF, but 2 is close enough for this purpose).

You need to know both measurements, because insulation imported from pretty much any country other than the USA will be rated in kg/m3, since that's what the rest of the world uses. Only the USA and a couple of other hold-outs still use imperial. But even then, if you bought USA made insulation that was packaged for export, it too would be marker in kg/m3, not just lbs/ft3. That's why I gave you both. The international units first, then the exclusively USA units, because you might find it marked either way in your local building supply stores.

R value is meaningless for measuring the acoustic properties of insulation. It only tells you about how heat moves through it, but sound is not related to heat in any usable way, and what you need to know is how sound moves through it.

Density is a bit more useful for that, as there is a rough relationship between the density of each type of insulation, and the property called "gas flow resistivity", which is what really matters.

I was scolded by the teacher and learned a valuable lesson at the same time. I am the grasshopper. You are the man Stuart! :D
Thank you for the lesson. I mean that.
