Hello,
First of all, I have been reading all over this forum for some time, but this is my first post. So, I want to extend a collective thank you to all of you who have put time into increasing my knowledge.
Now, to my problem... I have had to move into the basement from the room I was previously using because of the arrival of a couple of children into my life. I would like to use the room to record vocals and do some mixing, but after the first session I had the vocal recordings were pretty well unusable due to the horrendous sounding room. I was about to embark on analyzing the reflections in the room and trying to build some '25 min $25 acoustic panels' and '$42 bass traps' to try to even it out, but before I start down that path, I wanted to post a Sketchup of the new room to get an educated opinion if it's even worth my while. I know this room is far from ideal, but want to know if there's any point in trying to make it work for recording vocals and mixing. Or if I will need to resort to doing rough mixes in some headphones and finding somewhere else to record vocals.
Down the road, I may be able to do some renovations in the basement to get myself a more appropriately shaped room but for at least a year or two I am pretty much stuck with this if recording at home. (which is all I really do as recording isn't my main source of income).
So, I've attached my sketchup file, and have included some images below. I guess I'm looking for some guidance if I have even identified the main problems in my room, and if any or all of them are insurmountable. The problems I see:
1. The room is assymetryical
2. The room is smaller than should be for a control room
3. The ceiling is far too low
4. There are all sorts of nooks and crannies with the way the walls are built around the electrical panel, pipes, and above the foundation.
5. The window is in an awkward location
Because of one or more of these things above I get crazy amounts of comb filtering in my vocal recordings, and the lower mid range tails are very long on the vocal recordings I have done. I imagine that my bass frequencies will be a disaster too, but haven't begun to look at that.
Any guidance someone more educated about acoustics could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my room:

Thanks,
Aaron
Is it possible to make this room useable?

Hi. Please read the forum rules for posting (click here). You seem to be missing a couple of things!
