Got Material, Not Sure What To Do With It

Post by KevWillow »

Hey guys,
I wrote on here not too long ago about getting help on my studio with treatment and the response was overwhelming so thank you so much for that. I am writing now with a very quick query. I have been lucky enough to be given 24 pieces of AMF Thermatex Acousitc dB 41 (1200 x 600 x 24). Now after looking on the internet at the product name and such It has come up that these are infact ceiling tiles.

Website To The Product:
http://amfceilings.co.uk/product/view/2 ... stic-dB-41

Product Datasheet:
http://amfceilings.co.uk/userfiles/full ... B%2041.pdf

Now my question is, is there anything else i could use them for? My studio is in it's own dedicated room downstairs in the house so technically i already have a ceiling. So what would be the best thig to do with these, would it be to put them up on the ceiling (maybe using hooks to hold them up) or are they a product that i'm not going to find helpful.

I'm going round in circles here, an easier question,
although they are ceiling tiles, looking at the datasheet can i use them for other things within my studio, like another form of acoustic treatment and if so what?

Thank you for your time,

Look forward to seeing your responses!

For those who want to know what my room is like i had Auralex do a report on the room, so i will be doing everything they tell me too in this image apart from the diffusors on the ceiling!

Good call! That would be a big mistake. As far as I know, they don't publish the actual frequency range for those things, nor the polar plots, but based on normal diffuser theory, you'd have to have a REALLY high ceiling to be able to use those. Theory says that you need a minimum distance of ten feet between a diffuser like that and your ears, and the distance could be even greater depending on the lowest cutoff frequency. Three full wavelengths for half of the lowest frequency is the theoretical minimum distance...
so i will be doing everything they tell me too in this image
I would not do that: they are basing that diagram on one thing only: the dimensions and layout of your room. That might or might not be what your room ACTUALLY needs, and the only way you can tell what it actually needs, is by running an acoustical analysis of the room, to see how it is behaving in reality, not based on their guesses.

So before you do anything, I'd suggest that you should download REW, run that on your room, and post the results here so they can be analyzed. Based on that, and that alone, you can then decide what treatment is needed.

If you go to a manufacturer of acoustic products for recommendations, guess what they will recommend? :) Maybe you noticed that they only recommended their OWN products for your room? I wonder why?... :) It seems doubtful that they would recommend something made by another manufacturer, even if that would be better for your room! And even more doubtful that they would tell you about all the things you could do yourself that would just as effective (or even more effective), and would cost you less....

So my approach would be to first test the room with REW and see how it is actually behaving in real life, rather than guessing at how it might be behaving based just on numbers, then design the treatment that will treat the real problems, not the imagined ones.

Sure! No problem. However, the MDAT file that REW produces might be too big to be able to post it directly on the forum. In that case, uploaded it to some place like Dropbox, then post the link here.
