Starting from scratch

Post by sane »

Hey guys..

This is my first post so be gentle :)

I've just bought a house with a basement. Some of the basement should be my new studio. I've attached a drawing of the room, the dors are not exactly in the correct position, pretty darn close....

My budget is prtty much not existing, so I'm not sure if I choose to make new walls in the room (so I'm also asking advise to what accoustic stuff should be done).

I would though, like to ask you what is a fair price if I did choose to make a new room (building a skeleton in tree like all you guys do all the time ;) ). I'd probably have to pay to get all the work done, since I'm all thumbs.

I've browsed through the site and forum the last couple of weeks so I'm pretty confident that you know what you're doing.

So to sum up:
1. What should do if I chose to build walls (and what would an estimated price be)?
2. If I chose not to build, what accoustic treatments could I implement?
(I was thinking along the lines with: http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm

Best regards

I'm only going to record vocal and guitar in the small room, so no drums ;)

I will of course have a window between the two rooms.

I also found this post, and I thought something along the lines with this:

Well, if you're working with a non-budget, I'd recommend you don't build any walls. You'll have to treat the space, new walls or not, and adding walls means even more treatment to get it to sound right. If you'll be recording guitar and voice, you could probably get away without any serious low-freq treatment, unless the stuff you'll be mixing will be full-range sound.

If you strap rigid fiberglass panels across all the corners, and hang up similar panels on all the spots where you'd get first reflections from your monitor speakers to your listening positions (search the forum for "mirror trick") and you will probably be ok.

Hope this helps.
