??? I am screwed or am I

Post by Geoff Taylor »

Well I am moving again so my beautiful control room that I set up is no more. I am unfortunately moving into a one room apartment and now all I got is a living room and a bedroom to work with. Looks like I will be back into the bathroom vocal booth again. :( Anyone got any ideas?? I haven't moved in yet but I will hit the board with some demensions eventually but I am just curious if anyone has had to deal with this on here. I don't know if I should use my bedroom or living room?

How important is your personal non studio comfort to you?

If not much, I'd use the living room as a live room and the bedroom as a control room. With a Futon for sleeping needs. :)

haha my comfort is not an issue. Unfortunately my lady's comfort is of the upmost importance. I am only recording vocals here soooo that helps I don't have to set-up drums and guitars and the like. I was thinking bedroom control room...Here lucky enuff I have an understanding landlord so I can treat acoustically.

Well u could always do the old closet vocal thingy.

And wear the old faithful headphones on your head when cutting :)

of course my wifes 1st album was cut in a hallway with a ton of aurlex on the walls. I was more than happy to recut the leads in my finished Live room ala This site's tuteledge. On 3 of the songs.

Nothing Like a pre-release and a final album :)

Well atleast its nice to hear it can be done... :) I picked myself up a dynamic mic in hopes of maybe recording a little less of whats around me. Its tuff to record with condensors for so long and then go to dynamic. But thats a whole nother story. Anyways I can really notice the huge difference since I took down all the stuff of my walls in the current room...Its like night and day..Escpecially when your on the phone sounds like I am talking live from a tin can. Enough out of me..Thanks for the hope..

Well let me give you more detail. We used the hallway on the 1st floor of the house. I put up 3 pcs of aurlexaround the mic, sorta creating a 3 sided box with the mic inside it. :) Of course it was not perfect but thank god for Waves Rvoc which has an Overeasy Noise gate.

It worked. The 3 songs I recut where becasue i hated the performance not because of noise.

And we stayed with the condensor. (My main reason for saying this. LOL)

Most of the time we recorded late at night when all were sleep or we would pick up neighborhood dogs barking and other little stuff. We turned the furnace off of course when it was time to cut. Man It got cold in there. LOL

Thank God for progress. ;)

I was goin to go with Dynamic anyways for a different flavour. I also really luv my Waves Rvox. But I think I will have to get real creative in the new place...

Well I have moved. Unfortunately one of my monitors is busted. boooo

But I will post up some demensions and see if I can get some help. Its an older place so the ceiling is a little higher and its a hardwood floor. You should hear the verb in this place. The deadest room is the bathroom. I have no idea how I am gonna record vocals in this place. It will be interesting for sure and hopefully a lot of fun.
