boxy room questions...

Post by Boyd »

Hi all,
posted to the forum a couple of hours ago and cant find any record of my post so I'm trying again. If this turns out to be redundant, I apologize.

I have a smallish room in my house (W13'11" x L14'9" x H7'1") that is destined to be my writing/recording room for a while. I will mainly be recording vocals (my own) and mixing. That said, I have a few questions.

1. Is there any point in trying to make a room this small sound ok? Or should I just deaden the room as much as possible? I typically don't like recording vocals in a really dead room, but I suppose "dead" would be better than "bad"

2. I understand that common wisdom suggests that mixing down the length of the room is best. However, in my case specific features of the room make it much more practical to mix in the corner. Since the room is essentially a square and I would technically be oriented symetrically in the room (although 45 degrees of kilter) would this really be a problem?

3. I know I'm going to need some bass absorption at 80-160-320-400hz mainly. Is there an inexpensive DIY bass trap technique? I'm pretty craft and not afraid to build whatever.

Thanks,
Boyd
