Greetings.
I have a reasonable amount of Barium Loaded Vinyl left from a previous studio build.
Has anyone here had any experiences using "curtains" of this as a limp mass bass trap?
Ta,
Bob.

I need to tame the bottom end in my little room & I don't mind losing some area from the ceiling.
Years ago the maker of EMES monitors, Michael, told me about hanging a bunch of long MDF sheets with added foam/polyester/fibreglass padding across a control room to act as a very effective bass trap. As I have a few rolls of Barium Loaded Vinyl left over from a previous studio build, I thought I may be able to use them to do something along these lines.
I've just found out that Philip Newell does something similar, so I've ordered his book.
Was wondering whether anyone here has had experience or guidance with this procedure.
Thanks mate.
Over,
Bob.

ah... you'll find a significant amount of information on this site by search for "hangers" which is a generic term for "suspended absorption panels assembled as a broadband absorber". in most cases, the hangers are made using a cellulose fiber board (such as Homasote Soundboard 440) and wrapped with a light or medium weight insulation. these are suspended in a variety of positions around the room - ceiling, corner traps behind speaker soffits, etc. in your case, it would be interesting to see if anyone has a suggestion on using the BLV in that scenario or if maybe the BLV should be used as a membrane within a rigid insulation absorber or a damped membrane - perhaps as a false ceiling covering or within some cavity.
in my imagination, the BLV could a layered curtain and be hung between the hangers to add another interference layer which has different resonance properties.

I didn't relaise that "hangers" would be synonymous..... sorry old son. Will search as soon as I write this.
In my mind (quite likely a dubious place) various sizes/sheets of draped BLV would work, as they do behind walls etc.
That pic is very helpful.
Thanks & Happy 2011 to you.

Bob.
