Advice on studio needed, lots of Rockfon available!

Post by aquinox »

Hi all, I got an expensive SPL meter to borrow from my school and they had heaps of rockwool for ceilings they didn't use anymore.. I could take them away for free!
I could cover pretty much my whole room with it, I'm covering them with felt so they look better and don't give off dust.

So I did a test of my room in the current situation and would to have advice on how big, how thick and where I'd best place my pieces of rockwool. I made some pictures of my room to explain my situation. will make a video too!

and here are some pictures first

The stuff:

piece 1 glass is bad for the acoustics right? I placed a piece of rockwool to block most of it.

Did some filling of my doorstep, should I put a big piece on my door itself too?

Should I throw the dark ones away?

My testing setup:

I used the Standard ST 8850 SPL meter in C weighting mode on soft mode (35-100dB), with fast response. Is the cabinet where my mic is on of big influence? is the angle of my mic right?

What do you think of these results? How can I improve them during nifty placement of the Rockwool? Should I put on the ceiling?

So it appears my bass region is pretty flat except for a small peak around 67 hz and a huge dip ranging from 70-100 hz, and it is lower comparing to the highs. The mids are also a little indented. how do I fix these problems? I'm the most concerned about the big dip in the 70-100 hz region. and how would I stick the rockfon on my ceiling? should I cover my whole ceiling or partially? if so, where and how big should the plates be?

a schematic of my room is here

Thanks!

in general, create trapping by spanning the corners of the room (or stack ala super chunk), treat first reflection points, and since you likely have a ceiling-floor mode (67hz, 70-100hz), put a thick cloud over the mix desk.

It is better to not put the meter on anything that might resonate, such as those boxes. The best way is to attach it to a mic stand, or even simply hold it in your hand with your arm extended and slightly bent, angled about 30° to 45° upwards. The mic should be at the listening position, meaning the exact place where your head is when you are seated in your normal position.

Some of those might be due to resonance or reflection problems due to the way you had the meter set up. I would suggest that you re-do the tests with the meter placed in the correct way. It is also possible that the graphs really are showing your room response, but it would be better to make sure by repeating the tests.

In any event, like Glenn said you should start your treatment by concentrating you your corners, your first reflection points, a ceiling cloud, and maybe some on the back wall too. Do that, take another set of measurements, and see how things change so that you can determine what else to do afterwards.
