Control & Rehearsal Room in one?

Post by jeffjazz »

John, I love your forum! Thanks also for your vast info on the sae site.

I am a producer of all kinds of music, mostly through ProTools, and I play in a band. I have a garage 12' x 26' w. vaulted ceilings and my idea is to use it as both a mix room and a live / rehearsal room. If necessary, make it convertible w. some type of hinged traps like the ones used in the piano room of the Left Bank Productions Studio. Also, I was hoping there was room for a small iso booth and a small room for the computers and storage (mac G4 and a PC plus various effects). Use the high ceiling for hangings...

Do you think I'm better off splitting into two small rooms ala garage plan a or b, or do you think my original idea can be executed with professional results?

thanks a ton folks!

maybe make a 5' deep end section that contains a booth and puter box - that would give you a 12 x 21 main room which would make a fine mix/rehearsal room.

cheers

Great, John... I was actually thinking the same thing!

Here's my idea for basic components:

Front end: 5' x 12'
Entrance from house
iso booth: 4' x 8' ???
computer rm

Main Room: 12' x 21'
Entrance from front end & outside
Mix area (my zone) 6' x 8' including desk and nearfields
Drum Riser 4' x 8' (filled w. sand??)
Couch 4' x 2'

of course, i'll need to treat acoustically and deal w. hvac, but what do you think about the components? would you go about it differently... say more room for the iso booth, drums or mix area?

Thanks a ton, i'm trying to get a good idea of what can be done here before i draw out some plans!

Jeff : I second John's design drawing. I was about to suggest getting those drums out of the control room .

8) Pretty cool. ala garage studio 2 almost... it looks like it would work great!

would i have to enter or load into the studio through the house?

how would i access the electrical panel in the corner of the control room?

would it work if the schematic was flipped and the door to my house was about 3 feet off the wall in my living room? that wouldnt work for the missus :?

please see possiblities below (although not to scale, just rough)

BUT where would i put the noisy computers?

thanks!!
