Question about John's articles on the SAE site

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Question about John's articles on the SAE site

Post by MrLip »

I've done lots of searching but haven't really found a clear answer.

The 'insulation' you see in all the diagrams in John's SAE articles... what is it? I mean exactly what material is he referring to? It gives precise measurements (ie. 2" insulation) but I can't figure out what the "insulation" is.

John are you there? Noticed there's been some problems with the site. Hope all is going well for you.

Thanks.

I think what you're talking about is the Insulco Semi Rigid fiberglass batts...

Unless you're thinking about mineral wool such as Roxul.

There's also Owens Corning 703 which heavily discussed here in the forum.

What application do you need it for? Walls, acoustical panels, etc.?

When he's talking about 1" thru 4" insulation, specifically, he's usually talking about Rigid Fiberglass. Owens-Corning makes this stuff called 703, so when you see 703 on the boards, that what we mean. Many insulation companies make it in all different thicknesses.

Pound-for-pound and dollar-for-dollar its some of the best sound absorbing stuff there is.

So we use it a lot. ;)
