Hey guys....awesome forum, glad I found it in time! Studio construction
should be complete within a few weeks and I need to build some
treatments.
First off, just wondering if anyone has been using the new
"SelectSound" black acoustic board by OC? Seems like it could be used
on the surface of an absorber without the need to cover it in fabric.
Has anyone tried?
thanks

Do you have a link to the absorption specs? Then you can compare that with 703 and 705 of the same thickness to see if it works as well.

Yes, the specs for "SelectSound" look similar:
Coefficients @ 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 are as follows:
(two-inch thick)
703: .17, .86, 1.14, 1.07, 1.02, .98
705: .16, .71, 1.02, 1.01, .99, .99
SelectSound: .18, .71, 1.12, 1.12, 1.03, 1.02, 1.00
Seems just like the 703/705 but with an "all black core with a deep
black mat finish".
here's the link:

Not sure if both sides are finished or just one side, but you could just
get two 2-inch thick pieces and put them back to back, frame them,
and be done with it, without messing with fabric covering.
Any thoughts?

I've got a bunch of the Select Sound boards installed at my ADR stage, which is built inside an old movie theater. The main auditorium space (69x45)has got around 700 sq/ft of 1" on the projection wall, and there's 15 4x12 panels spread along the side walls. Since the theater had been gutted in 1991, these panels definitely cut down on what used to be a 6 second reverb time! In the ADR stage I've got both the 1" and 2" 4x8 panels. They are more expensive than unfinished 703, but not much. I think the 1" is around 90¢ /sq ft, the 2" around $1.20 or so. Definitely cheaper than 703 and fabric. I got mine from CWCI Insulation in City of Industry. The finish is kind of a smooth, matte black "skin" for lack of a better word. One side only. The skin is a bit fragile, ie it can tear if you puncture it, but overall it's pretty durable. To sum up, I'm very happy with them
