Trying to design composer Suite

Post by WS »

Hi

Thanks for the great site, spent a few evenings reading through stuff here. Very useful.

I'm trying to get a design together for a writing suite, that basically resembles a control room of a recording studio. I have a rough sketch attached of the room dimensions and the cieling height is 3000mm.

I started with just the idea that I wanted to stop sound leakage a bit, so I planned to use a layer of rock wool withe plasterboard over the top to form a false internal wall and cieling and try and maximise space. I also planned to have a second door into the room and a curved stage at the back for a sofa etc.

However looking around on this site at the various designs, I'm now concerned that the acoustics will be bad especially bass frequencies.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a carpenter coming round to see what I want building soon.

Thankyou

What kind of music are you composing? Loud, soft, instruments used and so forth. Are you going to do any recording in the room at all?

some more info

Post by WS »

Hi

Yes sorry, here's a bit more info

I will be writing and producing a broad mix of styles from orchestral midi mock ups to dance tracks.

I will record single instruments in the room such as my acoustic guitar and the vocals for my tracks. I have access via tie lines to a live room in the building so anything larger can be recorded from there. But I do like doing vocals in the same room.

I was planning to use laminate flooring for the main part and carpet on the client stage. I'll get some rubber sheet block under the laminate plus some chip board.

I use Dynaudio M1's for monitoring and also have to incorporate a plasma screen at the front for viewing films.
(That block at the front in the sketch is a fireplace)

I'll probably get a cabinet built for my computers or try and fit a cupboard into the recess next to the fireplace for them.

The lease on the building is for 10 years so I will have to take the whole thing out at some point so there can't be any structural changes to the the building.

Thanks in advance for any advice

What is the main reason for having the small sound like type entrance. Seems like a little wasted space.

Looking at the room size it seems you should think about using a version of Johns design. Scale it down to your size and the layout should work fine. <sorry 'bout posting the pic I just am having trouble with this work pc>

I think I would like to have that little air lock space to put computers in with their noisey fans.
So how about if I angle the side walls in like this. The ceiling will be pitched down from the back of the room aswell.

Not sure what to do with the recessess at the sides of the chimney. could these be bass traps?

Cheers

You'd normally want the angled ceiling angling away from the mixing position. So if the ceiling is already like that then just put your couch backing up to the chimney and use those as traps like you said.

If the other way then you could build soffits for your monitors in them.

I'm also having a hard time reading your measurements for the room to come up with any more ideas.

Hi Ron

Apologies for the lack of measurements, hope this picture helps.

The recess around the chimney is at the front, would I stuff these full of rockwool? also bit concerned about the corners at the back behind the sofa could these be better with some sort of trapping? I was thinking of getting the room to this shape and then getting some pre built realtraps for the corners.

The ceiling would be built on the frame of the walls so I could angle it however I needed it. Any suggestions? Also I'd like to cover the whole ceiling on the inside in rockwool covered in material to stop refections but not sure how best to secure this up there?

If you guys think this is a real mess up design I'm up for starting again, but the little room would be a cool place for the computers doubling as an air lock door entrance would be useful.

The room is top floor so I was going to float the whole thing on a neoprene /chipboard / laminate floor.

Thanks again
