Worth soffit mounting near fields?

Post by brookster »

Hi there,

Just a quick question. I'm only using nearfields at the mo as my control room doesn't warrant anything bigger (H 7.75' x L 8' x W 6.75'). Is it worth soffit mounting these to tame some of my acoustic problems (bass build up, as well as slight transmission to other rooms). The monitors are Genelec 1029a's.

Cheers in advance!

it's coincidental that you are talking about genelecs.

go to the genelec site and look at their studio tips area. they talk about the advantages of soffit-mounting. it's a brilliantly laid-out argument, and makes you (or me anyway) want to become a soffit junky.

basically you will gain the advantage of time alignment. free standing speakers radiate some sound backwards. that sound hits the front wall, then comes back at you out of time from the direct signal. this results in distortion.

1029's are tiny speakers (i personally don't like them at all, no offense meant), but the time alignment situation is a physical principal that should apply as well. remember, if you soffit mount, you wil gain 3db of bass boost. so know that when you are adjusting for mixing.

really close to the wall also gives you 3db boost, but your sound is still out of time. so if you're jammed up next to a wall, you might as go the extra mile and try out soffit mounting. i can't see any reason why it won't help the time-alignment issue.

the genelec site lays it out perfectly.
