I need help with the placement in my room and my treatment!!

Post by MattiaS »

Hi Everyone!

My Name is Matías and i'm Profesional Musician and a new member of this incredible comunity...

After a lot of reading and searching, I can't found information about acoustic tratment for a control room with specifications like mine.

My Control room is an empty room in the second floor here in my house (not too big), so the ceiling have a little angle.

Now i have a position into the room that I Know is not the best, because the rear wall is too near to me, but some people said to me that is the best position in a room with that characteristics.... so... I NEED HELP! maybe I need a new position into the room and a lot of acoustic tratment.

I drew some plans of the room..... in paint! but with the measures...

P.D: The room have a wood floor and the walls are "Durlock" (gypsum plate)

There's a ton of advice all over this forum. In the mean time, here are a few other links you'll find useful:

Well Ethan.... I read that thigs before asking.... and I was watching the videos (really good videos in deed), but you never talk about rooms with charateristics like mine...

In all your links always talk about Rooms with a flat ceiling, but my room have an angle in just one side of the ceiling.

I know that is best if you put your speakers in front of the small wall, but in my room that would be somthing like this:

So I don't know if the angle in the ceiling, the "bowindow" (it have a curtain in front) and the little space between the Closet and the curtain could afect in a bad way the speakers response and the Stereo Image.

Could you give me a little help with that... and finding the nulls and the best place for my speakers and for me?????

Thank you very much!

P.D: I tried to use the Harman Room Mode Calculator but I don't know if I Did it right.... because I suck using ft. and inches, here in chile we use the metrical system.

I don't have time to answer in detail today because I have to leave early in a few minutes. In the mean time, my ModeCalc program accepts Metric dimensions:

The only way to know what places are best for you and for the speakers is to measure the LF response at high resolution is you move things around. The varying ceiling height left-to-right is not ideal, but that can be fixed with a cloud that hangs parallel to the floor.

Hi Guys!

A lot of time away from here..... well after a lot of reading, watch videos, talk with people who knows about acoustic, I'm almost ready to install some D.I.Y. Broad band traps for my control room... but I'm still a little bit concern about my position in the room trying to keep the best simetry for a good Stereo Image.

Ethan never answer with more detail about my first questions.... and I never recieve more support from other users... but it's ok, the people here is busy people too and I understand that...

But now I really need a little bit of help before the instalation of the traps... This are a couple of 3D models (really basic models, the mesures are in the previous post) of my room and a posible treatmen with borad band absorvers, now it's a little bit diferent but that it's pretty much...

I need to know if that's the best position for my room characteristics, I know, It's better if you have the rear wall far away from you as is possible, but again, I have that position in my room trying to keep the best simetry and stereo image as possible...

Please Guys, i need all the help possible whit this, as soon as possible....

Thank you very much!!!! :yahoo:

I've never dealt with a room exactly like that before, but I'd still rather you set up the long way. Then hang a cloud over the front half of the room, with the cloud parallel to the floor. That should help to keep things symmetrical. Then put as many bass traps as you can manage all over the room, especially in corners but also behind you.

ok Ethan..... after a lot of work and cable fighting I change the position of my control room..... well here are my impressions:

1. The Stereo image was terrible
2. The Subwoofer can't work well in the new position because it was too close to the walls and furniture, I don't have enough space in that position.
3. I felt a diference in the way that the reflections interacts with me.... more space, or something, but the monitors response and image was aweful... so that was more significant for me.

So after all that, I came back to my original position, I know that is not the BEST position, but the stereo Image and woofer response is WAY better, so I'm gonna install the treatment for this position.

Now, what is best for my back wall, it's almost at 5' of my listenig position.... Is a good idea put a diffusor in that wall to have the sence of a far away wall??? or just more broad band traps???

Thanks again Ethan... really... :yahoo:

See you!

Aprox 10cm a 20cm sería bueno.

Thanks to Google Translate I see that Stuart gave you good advice. If it were my room I'd use absorption and diffusion, with the diffusion centered around ear height, and absorption everywhere else especially in the wall-wall, wall-floor, and wall-ceiling corners.
