I'm in the process of planning my ground-up studio build, which will consist of a Control Room + Band Rehearsal Room. I have purchased/read Rod's book, and been reading this website for some time. I'm trying to design around well-known room ratios in an attempt to reduce the amount of problems I get down the line. I have three questions, hopefully not stupid ones. If they are, I apologise. A) The best Sepmeyer Ratio is listed as = Height 1: Width 1.14: Length 1.39 Is it acceptable to turn this ratio on its side as far as building the Control room goes. Effectively being : Width 1: Height 1.14: Length 1.39 B) If this is acceptable, it would yield Control Room dimensions of : 2.4m Height x 2.105m Width x 2.926m Length This isn't a large room by any means. Will a well-known ratio have much effect on a room this size ? C) If a wall is built 2 inches shorter than the ratio states, will the ratio's benefits be TOTALLY lost, or will the room be just a little less perfect than if the ratio was spot on ? Sorry for these questions. I'm trying to determine if the benefits of using the ratios are worth the trade off in terms of lost space/ awkward room sizes, especially as it’s a home-build etc. Thanks Bonk
as long as you don't have even multiples or common dimensions (esp in a small room) then its more than likely OK. if you can hit a good ratio thats nice, but in such a small room as the one you describe, you're likely better off keeping the space and planning on the treatments you'll need. technically the ratios are defined with the height = 1 but sound behavior is in 3 dimensions so if the ratio fits the box, then the modes are roughly the same just distributed on different planes.
