I have searched on this, and found very little. Knightfly has some comments in one of the stickys, but it does not apply in this case. I have a couple of gaps between the door frame and the wall studs that are too wide to use caulking. What is the recommended method for filling those larger gaps? I have not read a lot of good comments on the expanding foam stuff, but I am not sure what else to use... Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Larger backer rod, and then more caulk. Maybe apply it as if you were welding - in a back & forth, side to side motion to distribute the caulk over the larger backer-rod. Also - can you post a picture of the culprit?
You might even consider picking up one sheet of MDF - and cutting pieces to the exact gaps. This provides alot of mass. Just a thought.
Best to pack it with either insulation pieces or thermafiber - but do not pack it overly tight. Then you should be able to apply a backer rod and caulk to finish it off. BTW - any time you have hugh caulk joints - in order to get clean neat finish joints - use painters tape to edge both members - then caulk and dress - finally stripping the tape to leave 2 beautiful clean edges behind. Sincerely, Rod
Thanks for the ideas Brad and Rod. I will take a pic and post it.

Dang!!! What a great idea! Where were you 2 months ago??? ;)
I just checked the gap, and it is a good 1/2"...
Just tell the man you need 3 tubes of 1/2" caulk, he'll know what ya mean:0
