From what I've read, according to code as long as I have a door that opens directly to the outside world, then I can use a "non fresh air providing" mini-split system for my cooling needs. Can anyone tell me about how often I would need to open the door to let fresh air/oxygen in for an 11x15 room? Basically how long could I work in that room before running low on oxygen with 2 or 3 people in the room?
I am a little confused here. I have a standard residential HVAC system in my house. It has a vent in the closet that opens to the attic. I supposed that the system pulls air from the attic, heats/cools it, sends it down the ducks, into the rooms, the rooms, the room returns pick it up and send it back to the closet where the system is and vents it back to the attic. This way fresh air is coming into the system all the time. Am I all wet here? Very easy for me to be wrong... which is why I started by saying I am confused...lol If I am then how does it work to keep us all from suffocating. jam
you may have read that from a post of mine. i have a single room with the same situation. i asked rod if i can just open the door every couple hours to get fresh air in there, and he said that's fine. he didn't specify an exact time, but i'm sure you'll "feel" when it's time. anybody else know the real way to know the answer?
i think you would need to know how many people there would be plus how air tight the room was with doors and windows shut then subtract the amount of air used by the people from the amount of air in the room. plus the exchange rate of air through the opening passively.

Jam, unlkess you are in the most polluted sections of cali (from strictly an air quality point of view) you are not going to have any fresh air issues if you system doesn't pull in fresh air. In other words - you won't suffocate in normal homes from lack of oxygen just because you don't have a fresh air supply. Rod
