hi there! this is my first post. we have been getting ready to rebuild our studio (we record all manner of rock, jazz, and folk music) after our landlord decided to put a stairwell right through our old live room. yay! javascript:emoticon('') the landlord is putting up the outer shell of the entire studio (a rectangle L 34'1" X W 30'10" X H 11') and we are finishing the interior. the top, left, and bottom spaces outside the drawing are all hallways. the right wall is brick, ceiling and floors are 8" concrete. the three rooms (2 top, 1 bottom right) will be combination workroom/isobooths with small windows facing the center of the live room. to me, these all seem to make sense and negate having the concrete pillars in the middle of the live room. the main problem i am having is figuring out what to do with the control room. we obviously want the room to be symmetrical, but large enough for our new neotek series 3 (represented by the rectangle in the room), engineer, 4 to 5 band members, a couch and some racks and a tape machine. i've posted 2 rough sketchup drawings of the designs we've been tossing around. the long CR seems to give us the most room, but i can't figure out if it makes sense (or is even possible) to have people enter from the lock (left middle) into the CR behind the console. we obviously want people to be able to get in and out of the CR without going through the live room, and avoid building any extra doors if possible. our budget is between $1-4 thousand dollars, but most of that will be on our credit cards. do either of these designs make sense? how can we optimize them? thanks for any help!!!

okay, just found the dimensions tool! sorry if this is crappy.

take advantage of the pillars to add some angles or diffusion. minimize the number of walls you need to divide the space. $5K isn't going very far since your walls need to be 11' high (about 40% increase in materials over an 8' ceiling - but then building false ceilings would waste all that nice height)...

man, that looks great! unfortunately, the top and bottom right rooms need to stay pretty much where they are. the top is goign to be a small workshop and a room we can toss an amp into. the bottom room is for mastering and also for an amp/acoustic bass, etc. they are being rented to people in the space for their use. also, there is a public stairway about 13 ft wide (right to left) just along that bottom right room. basically, my questions are as follows: 1. how can we get people in and out of the CR from that lock on the middle right in the longer design? 2. is the corner design just too small and tight? (we might be able to move the right wall a little further out) thanks for your help, and i'll try to put some better drawings together. right now i need to get things together to pick up our new board and drive it back from nashville tomorrow! aaaaarrrrrrrgggggghh!!!!!!
i think the corner will work better for you but i'd expand it a bit - even if it juts into the live room a bit so you have enough space to work.
yeah, i think you're right about the corner. it seems more important to us to have a comfy control room rather than a really big live room. is there something we should do to deal with the hexagonal post in the control room (bottom left)? here's an updated model

part of that back corner will be a bass trap anyways and you can build up some absorption/slats around the pillar and then mirror that shape on the other side as a storage closet or something. but i think this design works more effectively for you.
thank you for all of your help. it REALLY helps to be able to bounce ideas off other, more experienced minds. off to go estimate materials costs! -nick
