. . . I'm thinking electroshock har har har. anyway: Hello again everyone! After a ton of reading (posts on here and Rod's book) and a ton of hammer swinging, I've got some more questions. The first is mostly about room treatment, but I feel like this is all too broad not to put into the construction section. Question #1: Preliminary Room Treatment In Rod's book, he shows a design for a fictional room. Right off the bat he shows the installation of corner bass traps and a cloud. I'm going to follow this advice and before I get a bunch of gear in there I want to build Corner Traps into the 4 corners, as well as an 8x8 rockwool and 2x4 cloud hanging on chains above the mix position. It would be easiest for me to build between 2 and 4 foot wide simple rockwool and fabric traps into the corners (with an air gap behind them), but I noticed there is more emphasis on building helmholtz slat resonator traps. Which is best for my room? I have a bunch of 2x4 x 4" thick rockwool slabs, and also a bunch of auralex sonoflat panels for tweaking reflections later. I'm not sure if you need this to answer that, but if so here's the full pre post rundown: Goal: Building a Control Room into a large existing rented historical/abandoned structure. Can't mess with existing walls, but there is a newly built walk in closet I'm cutting holes in for a machine room (it will be my cramped office too, ha). Construction is very much underway. It is sheet rocked, mudded and primed. For various reasons (getting out voted by a partner, lack of understanding, stuff moving too fast, poor decision making) I've made a hand full of mistakes (floating floor!!!! oops!!!), but I don't own the building, so at this point I just want to power through it and start working on music again! Sound Volume: At the moment I am only building a control room. I am very happy with my little Adam P11a nearfield monitors and NS10's. I do have a 12" sub, but rarely turn it on. I'll mount the speakers on the back of the mixer, or just off of it. I've never liked soffit mounted monitors, so there's no worry about ever doing that. The big room and isolation isn't much of a concern at the moment, but if anyone is curious here's the deal with that: We brought a drum kit and bass rig in before we started and checked it with an spl meter. But I can't remember the exact number we got. Anyway, the control room is just designed to keep a decent amount of isolation for monitoring during tracking normal rock bands in the big room. When mixing, the Control Room is well beyond isolated enough to keep my little nearfields from getting anywhere. Construction Detail: The Control Room: around 14.5 ft wide 17.5 ft long 11 ft tall Walls are splayed at around 11 degrees I stupidly cut off the back corners thinking that was what people meant when they drew images with cut off corners (oops). So the back two corner walls are around 2.5 ft wide (see image below if this isn't making sense). It's a completely free standing structure 10" away from the "machine room" (bad idea, it was almost impossible to get in between there). FLOOR 2x6 joists filled with insulation 3/4 subfloor (bad idea to create a wooden deck floating floor, but too late, and I can't fill it with sand) 2 layers of 7/16 OSB will be green glued to the top of the 3/4" stuff. Carpet pad and carpet for most of the room, 8x8 cabinet plywood below the engineers office chair. WALLS Staggered 2x4 studs on a 2x6 plate. Both leafs consist of 1/2" homosote and 5/8" sheetrock (bad idea #3, should have varied it, might add another layer of sheetrock later if i need to). CEILING / ROOF 2x6 joists. The inner "ceiling" leaf is 5/8" sheetrock and 1/2" homosote outer "roof" leaf is 1/2" sheetrock and 3/4" OSB subfloor DOORS one cheap prehung metal one heavy wooden school door both free! WINDOW 8' by 40" double layer 1/4" thick laminate glass (all I can afford). Angled like in Rod's book. (not built yet). VENTILATION I will be attempting to do the exchange chamber system using johns mansville ducts going over and resting on the roof and coming down thorough the ceiling. I'll probably have to surround them with scraps of sheetrock for better isolation on the roof. The machine room will be the exchange chamber. I'll keep you guys updated on how it goes!!! ha Big Live Room: Horsehair plaster, brick, old 2x12s, metal beams, etc. . . I'll build gobos at he way end. The "machine room" is a sheetrock and 2x4 structure that was built as a walk in closet. It's dimentions are 12' by 5' with probably 7' ceilings. Image: Attatched below Budget: This may come as a shock, but I'm way over budget. I do already have a lot of 4" thick 2'x4' rockwool pieces, (6) 12' 2x4s to build the traps with, and my car can fit 8' 2x4s on the roof. I guess I'd like to keep the rest of the cost for the traps within $200 bucks. Thanks everybody!! Hope this isn't too much info, but I wanted to answer all of the prepost stuff! -Chris
