Hi all,
I must say this forum has been extremely helpfull and I am much apreciative! Maybe someday I will be able to return the help to a future newbie.
I am in the process of building a studio consisting of a vocal booth, main studio (for recording drums and acoustic instruments such as Guitar, Fiddle, etc....), and a control room. I have a sketchup of a floor plan that I would like "critiqued" if you will.
My current gear consist of pro-tools mbox 2 which I have been learning on for a little over a year now. However I do plan on upgrading to at least digi 003 if not an HD Package when the new studio construction is complete
Monitors = Event ASP8
I am currently using the pre-amps that are native to the mbox 2 and of course I will be in search of much more equipment when the studio is built. I want to buy equipment that makes since for the studio I can build.
Disturbing Neighbors will not be a concern at all as I basically live on a hillside in the woods about 1100 feet from the road and 800 feet from my nearest neighbor which happens to be my hard of hearing parents LOL! (don't judge me on that comment, they have a great since of humor also).
My studio construction is under way and I have had to build it on 17 6"x6" pressure treated post 3' feet off of the ground. I know! - this is not ideal but it is what it is.
Anyway, it's 6"x6" post, 2"x10" floor joices 2' on center with 5/8" tongue and grrove decking. The deck is built and is 24' x 20' in size. (outside measurements).
The outside walls are up and they are 2" x 6" with stagared 2" x 4" studs. Both rows of studs are 16" on center for each of the 3 walls. The fourth wall is the side of my house which is all 2x4 studded (single row). 5/8" plywood used on outside of 3 walls and inside the studio on the wall of my house. 3 walls will be covered with vinyl sideing.
The trusses are up giving me a 5:12 pitch with 9' ceilings. 2x4 trusses.
My budget for the construction costs is about $15,000 give or take a couple thousand and I will be doing most of the labor myself.
I have plenty of time to read and have already read a ton but information on soundproofing a wooden deck seems to be avoiding me to a certain extent.
The db level at which I will be mixing will depend on what my control room likes after it is finished and as far as in the main studio room, drums can get pretty loud but I will be recording on tracks one at a time so it shouldn't get to loud i wouldn't think.
Questions:
1. Any help or suggestions on how I should aproach the flooring issue?my thought is to sadwich 1/8" thick sound absorbing material between my current layer of 5/8" decking and laminate flooring with a floating drum riser in the corner?
2. My thought on the ceiling is to wrap the trusses with an acoustic fabric and hang a double layered dryawall between each truss. Do you happen to have any suggestions on insulation for the floor and the ceiling?
3. Interior walls if I understand what I have read correctly should be double walls with an air gap between them? and heavily insulated? I will not be useing any windows at all. I will be adding a monitor display with a camera security system to view each room from my comfortable chair in the control room. (eventually)
The following floor plan was inspired from a floor plan i found on this forum and I think I like it alot but I could use some expert critiqueing if you will?
Floor Plan feedback?

After reading, reading, and more reading, I have realized that attempting to sound proof my "studio on stilts" is not going to be the most intelligent, cost effective, and more importantly, safe goal to attempt. No one needs a studio falling to the ground during a session (Sound proofing is extremely heavy - LOL!). That would be BAD! Being that the "stilts" are a must, give'n my possible options, I have chosen to use headphones while recording and put my efforts into acoustic treatment which will be much lighter. I am extremely greatfull for the wealth of information on this site and I hope I have not worn out my welcome this early in my short "Recording Studio design forum" existance. I am sure there is a good reason why I have received zero reply's in this thread thus far. Could be that I missed something in the "Read before Posting threads", Moderators too busy, know one wants anything to do with a "Studio on stilts" (after what i've learned here - I don't blame you), I am in the wrong thread, etc...... Anyway, Awesome forum! And thank you all for putting forth the time and effort that you have to create this forum.
maybe read up on some of John's garage studio designs on the SAE site. they may be a fit. sorry for the delay.
