So the design of my studio has come a long way but I am sure you guys can give it that little bit more it needs. I have finally emptied the place out and am anxious to start building but as I have learned from reading around the forum, preparation is key. All of the walls (including perimeter) either need to be constructed from scratch or reconstructed due to zero insulation. The ceiling is still a big question mark! Hopefully the pictures included can offer some ideas. The floor will be redone with laminate wood and I will be making a drum riser in the live room. Some extra background info: -the space is the upper floor of a two level industrial unit. -the floor is concrete with tiles -The tenant downstairs does get loud at times; however the mezzanine ends at the half point of the entire unit and the rear wall is just framing and drywall on one side so I believe by building that wall with a mass air mass design will be sufficient as opposed to floating the floor Thanks a lot for any help. Guy Edit: Ceiling height, from what I understand, will be 9 feet.

it looks like a decent design. if i'm reading it right, you might flip it front to back though so people don't have to carry equipment through the control room, plus the CR levels will typically be lower so the glass window out front should be less of a problem to isolate. if i'm not reading it right, ignore me... :)
Hi Gulifo, thanks for the reply. The reason for having the Control room at the wall without the windows is because the tenant downstairs does get loud at times and i would rather contend with him during mixing as opposed to getting his sounds in the recordings. The wall with the windows will have a newly constructed wall in front of it to completely takeit out of the equation and to avoid sound transmission from outside. Would it be too much to ask if you could put my design into one of those well done skethups as my skill with is very very limited. Also that is a very good point about having to bring equipment through the control room. I will deffinately have to give that another look. Guy
if you can post your 2D sketch file and include where the stair is entering the floor, its not clear which way you enter the space from below.
Hi Gulifo, thanks for the reply. Here is the skethup file of the space with all the dimensions. I would like a fresh take at the layout and I am sure, being that I have never worked in an actual studio, that you have better judgement than I do. I know that it is a smaller space to work with but I think I can fit a Control Room, Isolation Booth, and a Live Room. Control Room: I would like it to be big enough to be comfortable and offer the bands a space to relax. ie. A couch. Isolation Booth: A dead space to record vocals and any instruments when looking for that sound. Big enough to record drums in. Live Room: A more lively sound where I can record drums and other instruments. The challenge is making this room big enough to fit a four piece band for rehearsing. Even if it is a bit tighter, it should be fine. The north wall is the weakest in terms of sound isolation right now and I am concerned that even after I beef up the existing wall that some sound might still come through. (The tenant does use some loud equiptment) Thanks again. Guy

Guy, I'm just curious if this is what you mean with the stairs entering the room? ;)

Yes, you got the side of the stairs that enters the room except Im on the upper floor. Thanks for clarifying that!! Just in case theres more confusion, in terms of my sketchup file, the stairs come up into the room at the northern point. Guy
