Hi, My friend has a space that would be converted into a studio. I attached the drawing of the existing space. The dimensions are in meters. Need suggestion on room layout. My plan is to have a control room and a recording room as big as possible, but not sacrificing the sound inside the control room. It will be doubled as a rehearsal room, so when we rehearse, it would fit some people, but at the same time, it's good enough for recording drums and vocal overdubs. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance. Ari

Aloha and welcome to the forum! :D Congrats on your studio build! Any chance you could please:
Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
You'll probably get more of a response by doing so and this will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines. Thanks! For more info, check out both of these links - http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7572 http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Looking forward to your build! Hi, Kendale. And thanks for the welcoming words. :) Sorry, I didn't know if there are rules about this. Ok, I added my location to my profile. It's in Bandung, Indonesia. And I'm going to post smaller picture, 700px wide maximum, right? I think the infos are all there. Hopely. Additional info, the planning of the room height is going to be 3 meter high for the inner room, the existing height is higher about 3.5 meter. Ok, hope that I did this right, so I would get answers. :) Thanks. Ari

More infos, I'm willing to spend US$2000 for all renovations, but if it won't permit a good quality studio, maybe I could borrow more money. And the room will be used as a rehearsal studio and recording studio, using DAW (probably Digi002 setup) so the recording setup would be small, no big mixer. :) Inside the recording/rehearsal room will be drums, bass-guitar-keys amps, and electric piano, and a small PA system. Aloha, Thanks for editing your profile. In Rod Gervais’ book “Build it Like the Pros,” http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 he points out both L.W.Sepmeyer’s & M.M. Louden’s formulas most widely used in professional studios worldwide. He also notes that the orders listed are (top to bottom) the first to third best ratios in both cases. L.W. Sepmeyer Height Width Length 1.00 1.14 1.39 [105] 8’9” x 9’10” x 12’2” 1.00 1.28 1.54 1.00 1.60 2.33 M.M. Louden Height Width Length 1.00 1.40 1.90 1.00 1.30 1.90 1.00 1.50 2.10 Perhaps something like this? Aloha 8)

Thanks Kendale, What a coincidence, your design is exactly what I have in mind! I even had the same book. Here's what I have tried to design. How is it? If it's good, I'm going to follow your design by splaying the walls, so there will be no parallel walls at the tracking room. Ari

one concern would be the glass on the side of the desk vs whatever is on the other side of the desk causing uneven response/reflections. one thought i had was to twist the CR to "flatten" the view into the live room and just use acoustic treatments (like what Kendale has shown) in the live room.
