Okay guys, i think i'm in the right area- i hope so atleast. I'm working on floor plans to build a new studio-however, i have been researching this site, and gearslutz.com and looking/reading basicly lurking around trying to figure out the best way to go. I want to soffit mount my speakers. however, so many people say NOOO. So many people say YES with big smiles on their faces. I have a pair of Yamaha HS50m's. I like them, and i've gotten some great mixes off them. I just moved, into a new place, and i'm trying to build walls that will be sectioned into panels that could move with me, if i don't buy this place, i would like to take my resonators, and such with me. Here is the thing, after reading this forum, soffit mounting is the way to go-after reading around people say no way. before i sit down and figure out my plans, i wanted to know- will my space and monitors benefit from this? or should i put them on stands and use the bass traps that i've already built to work with the room. i have seen a few designs on here and i love them. i want a front wall, side wall and a completely dead backwall...what i'm asking is. if i put all this time, money, and work into this will i be bummed out. or better question is, can i get the same results from the bass traps i already have?(i have alot) or should i sell my traps and really go all out with building walls and such. i hope i'm not being too vague in my questions. let me know if anything needs to be cleared up. my room is basicly a square box, if i'm rembering right its like 14 feet 6 inchces long, 14 4 wide, 9 6 high. i would like to make a front wall, resonators, and a cloud that would sit on top of walls- i have supplier of mineral wool insulation in pittsburgh, and i've gotten alot of material off him for bass traps. let me know what you pros out there think, i have a good understanding of acoustics so please lay it on me. thanks in advance for contributing to sucha great site.
I personally would never soffit mount rear ported speakers. Dave.
I agree with Dave - But - beyond that - what does one have to do with the other???????? DO you think (for a moment) that by soffit mounting your speakers you suddenly don't have modal issues? Not only is the answer "yes you do" - in your case - with a (basically) square room - you will have double the problems of most - meaning you will have the same modal issues in 2 axial directions - so you might well need more traps than you have now. Try getting a little more exact with your plans (you are very VERY vague about what you want to do) ands we might be able to help you further. Sincerely, Rod
