I'm planning on building my first studio in my basement. I have a budget of around $1,000 - however, I am getting some materials basically at cost. I have a friend in the supply business, and am getting a very good deal on 2X4's and drywall.
I'm not very good with design.... but did my best to create a Sketchup drawing so you can get the basic idea of the layout of my basement.
The blue area is the area that will not be used for the studio. It's kind of a weird design....
I'd like to have a live room/drum room, a control room, and a vocal booth if possible.
The ceilings in the basement are about 7.5 feet high, not finished at all. On each side there is a vent for heating. Currently, the basement is entirely open - no walls or anything.
The walls are concrete, and so are the floors.
Any ideas for the best way to lay this studio out? What should I do to the floors for the best sound? I've read a lot about staining the concrete... will that work in this situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My goal is to create something that will sound great acoustically, and also make the noise more tolerable upstairs for my wife. I'm not worried about neighbors at all. I will be recording live bands (mostly rock).
I am totally addicted to this board! Thanks so much for your help!!!!

Nate - get out the measuring tape and provide an accurate floorplan.
you won't get it built for $1000 IMO.
hello nate.
i am about to make a proper go of my basement. you seem to have a good bit more space than i do. my is about 14 x 22. i started doing some rough estimating. i was hoping for about 3000 i started heading for 5000 rather fast. i hope to bring it back to 3000. i am currently getting some good feedback from kendale. i am trying to focus on getting the loudness down and acoustics second. drums are a killer. i will keep up with your posts.
