I am starting to layout my studio in my basement and wanted to see what you guys think of the layout before I start putting walls in. I plan to record drums so im thinking about soundproofing. I cleaned out all the walls so its a empty basement with a concrete floor and their is not much ac vents in the way... My budget is roughly 2,000 USD

Aloha and welcome to the forum,
It looks like you've got a nice room to start with. You may want to reconsider the control room design, though. A few things to consider and establish are: - optimum room ratios/minimum modal issues - eliminating any parallel walls - left/right room symmetry (at least within a foot or two of ear height) for good stereo imaging. How tall are your ceilings? Perhaps this might be helpful - http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html (Be sure to click on the "acoustics" and "absorbers" tabs on the left and those that show up on the top) DIY Wall Units - http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htmI am starting to layout my studio in my basement and wanted to see what you guys think of the layout before I start putting walls in.
What is the current construction of the exterior walls & ceiling? Looking forward to your build, Aloha 8)I plan to record drums so im thinking about soundproofing.
the exterior walls are concrete all around and the ceiling is the regular 2x8's. I think im going to go with some RC-8's for the ceiling and walls with a osb then sheet-rock layer system.. with some acoustic insulation in the walls... the ceilings are 7ft. So with the size I have is their any other layout that would make a better control room...
thanks, aaron
wow. i am about to embark on turning my current studio into as sound proof of a studio as possible of a basement studio. 2 year old son sleeping on the second floor and all that. i am currently doing the research right now. a bit over whelming. not sure to what level to take it to. i would like to do a band practice at 11:00 pm and not wake anyone.
it may be helpful to give us a floor plan including the ducts, plumbing, utilities, etc... in case they're pertinent to the design...
ok here is a the layout with a little paint... I am going to change the metal air ducks out with the fiber glass ones... I have the ablity to run power to wherever...
Aloha,
In Rod Gervais’ book “Build it Like the Pros,” http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 he points out both L.W.Sepmeyer’s & M.M. Louden’s formulas most widely used in professional studios worldwide. He also notes that the orders listed are (top to bottom) the first to third best ratios in both cases.
M.M. Louden
Height Width Length
1.00 1.40 1.90 7’ x 9’8” x 13’3”
Perhaps something like this?
Aloha 8)
i think i would take Kendale's design and flip it so the CR is in the live room space and then you may have a bigger live room...
Which way is the beam running that carries the upper floor and what supports that beam?
