Hi everyone, i just found this forum 2 days ago and have been reading like crazy over all the knowledge that's available. Hence i've been motivated to look at treating my room properly so i can use it as my studio/bedroom. I'm 19 and i'm from Australia, I've been recording for about a year but haven't been too excited about the results. Like you all say the room is the starting point. And i really want to get it sounding good so i can get on to making music. So here goes nothing.
Room Usage
Like i said, one room will be used for recording and mixing
Noise
Built a new computer about 3 months ago specifically for recording, no other ambient noise, so it's almost silent.
The Room
The room measures 276cmx360cm (LxW) with ceilings at 240cm and carpeted floor. I don't have the most trained ears but there is certainly a boom quality when playing the guitar in any direction.
Budget
Budget is $500Aus. (Roughly $430 US)
I'm really not confident enough to go DIY so i'm just looking at premade stuff i can access here in Australia. Fonic is currently front runner, specifically their wall tiles and low/mid traps. Here and Here.
I've uploaded two sets of plans i drew up, all the furniture is to scale, can't really spin the room around because the wardrobe is too reflective and can't be treated.
My thinking is i need to minimise reflection from the monitors, hence the two sets of six tiles opposite. I also face the computer when recording so i suppose the panels in front and behind of a mic will reduce unwanted room reflections/echoes.
Now the corner traps aren't really true bass traps cause, A) they're much more expensive and B) obviously larger. which isn't going to work for this small room. By the looks of things these are still going to be somewhat effective. Some data from Fonic Here
Questions
1) are the tiles better of bunched up like the picture or some spacing?
2) do i need to consider treating the ceiling in any way?
As i say my budget is fairly restricted, and the amount i've used on the plans is basically what i can afford and access in Australia.
Thanks for reading, I appreciate any input anyone can offer.

i'd put one of the corner traps over the mix wall-ceiling corner, and space out the tiles and put some overhead on the ceiling over the mix position.
the windows may cause reflections - so maybe some heavy drapes to pull over them when mixing/recording.
another option is building the traps/absrobers yourself - compare and determine.
Thanks for the tips, any suggested spacing for tiles, they're 500mm x 500mm?
The windows currently have timber/laminate blinds, which i suppose are just as reflective...
Also what are the benefits of a corner trap on the mix wall(could i take one from elsewhere in the room?)
And finally any examples (pictures/diagrams) of tiles on the ceiling to get an idea of how many i'd need?
Thanks again for your input. Anyone else have a view on this?
if you leave about 250-350mm between them - checkerboard or linear layout - doesn't seem to make significant difference.
Thanks Gullfo,
Here we go, added a corner trap above the mix position, but for cost reasons i'll have to sacrifice some length from the right corner and rear mix wall traps. (shouldn't be much of a loss should it? can always add on later)
Made some space between panels. disperesed them wide enough so i can still fit my hanging guitars that aren't pictured.
Also drew in two panels, directly over the mix position.
Hows it look now?
this seems like a good first step. also consider the side reflections. maybe a pair of these on mic stands at about the corner of the desk angled back about 15-30 degrees.
Interesting, might consider adding these at a later date. But i figure that going from no room treatment to what i've drawn should provide a pretty good starting point.
thanks for everything gullfo.
