Hi All, I am very new to all this - and this is my first ever home studio. Im from the Uk and this studio will be my own space. I am building it myself with a hand from a builder. I seen some your designs and they are immaculate. i was wondering if someone could knock me up a quick design. my room is 17' by 7'1/2' (normal garage size) the garage door will be left and i will build a breeze block all on the inside then plater it so i have a room with just one door leading into it. I will post some ppictures of the current garge as soon as i can. however i would like a vocal booth in here too, enough to have one or 2 people in there. would there enough space for my control room? if someone can knock me up a quick design id be very grateful. Many thanks. Dee
Hey, welcome. Could you specify your doors position and ceiling height for us? Without this information it's quite hard to configure any setup, even a quicky. :? 't Would be even better if you could sketchup a simple floorplan for us to work with. http://sketchup.google.com Free 'n Easy. With the video tutorials, you'll be getting busy in 10 minutes top (no bluff, it's true). 8)
Aloha and welcome to the forum! :D Congrats on your studio build! In addition to including your ceiling height, any chance you could please:
Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
You'll probably get more of a response by doing so and this will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines. Thanks! For more info, check out both of these links - http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7572 http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Looking forward to your build! Aloha 8)
Hi Thanks guys for ur feedback. Sorry i didn't read the info first! I am based in Birmingham UK! i have designed a quick sketch to give u an idea of where the door is. i like to produce Bhangra music (Indian music from the Punjab area of India) and also hip hop. Both are pretty much loud! My setup is as follows: PC Based logic 5.5 Yamaha 03D Mixer Mackie 1202 8 channel Mixer Korg Triton Classic Rode NT2 Compressor Mic Wharfdale 8.2a Diamond Monitors. its not much at the mo but im working on this too. but before i start changing my Monitors to get the right sound, i want to get the perfect room to work in.

Some help please?,.....
Still waiting to see you list all the details bud: _ceiling height _materials of construction _neighbours (sides, above and below?) _Do you want Softfit monitors? _What are you looking for in terms of isolation? Yes, these details are necessary 8)

ok, Because im @ work now i cnt measure the ceiling height, but i will do when i am at home. the materials of construction im assuming that i will use a breeze block wall to block the garage door up, plaster it and wallpaper the whole garage with Carpet. I dont how im going to create the partition for a live room though... thats kinda what i needed help with. there are no problems with neighbours either side, its a detached house and my family owns houses either side so its cool. im not really bothered about soffit monitors just yet, as the active monitors i have are pretty crap, and if i bought some adams s3 a's then id have to change that anyway... but thats for the future for now they cool on stands. Isolation? as in the live room? just one window from the control room. and i want a nice dead sound in there. mainly going to be used for vocals. again, will post the ceiling height later on tonight! Thanks dude for advice so far.. ur questions are getting my cogs ticking about the whole design!

carpeting the walls is bad for a couple of reasons - one acoustics, two safety. its a very tight space not matter what... you could try things sideways as a possible means of fitting things. making the back wall very dead. if nothing else, try to angle the dividing wall or plan on extra absorbers to cut echos.

No knowledge bout the safety part, but acoustic-wise carpet is indeed not a very good idea, as it only takes on the highest frequencies and gives a room a "claustrofobic" sounding feel.
generally, carpet on the walls is a fire hazard unless specially treated.
Plans have changed a little... I have taken the decision to build the studio in the back of the garden (from scratch). So obviously building will have to be erected etc... Im getting some builders in next week. the size i have to play with is 30 ' long and 15 ' wide. Now there is no building erected as of yet so building walls etc will make that space smaller. Is there anything i should look out for when erecting this building? shape will be an obvious rectangle..., but what i really need to know is are there special measures i should use to insulate the walls? in the UK we have brick on the outside, with breeze blocks on the inside and insulation or foam sandwiched in between. This week im looking to start on the foundations. i will take pics and post them up as we go along. once again thanks, and any advice will be appreciated.
Do you have the intentions of pouring separate slabs for individual rooms?
I have the intention of Separating the rooms yes. One for Control, and one as a live room. Im not quite sure what you mean by "separate slabs"?!
I tried to locate a picture to better illustrate what I was referring to, but could not locate one. I did, however, locate the information that is directly related to decoupling the slabs to eliminate mechanical transfer. F. Alton Everest || Master Handbook of Acoustics Specifically, if your intention is to actually develop a quality product then this ONE thing you do, can help you in this effort. I would consider it strongly if I were laying out a slab for an audio environment.
getting the old 404 page on that link my friend!
My bad, I was using the FireFox browser. Link to Books @ Google.com and "search books" for isolation slab studio. "Master Handbook of Acoustics" is currently at position 4.
Ok, so below i have attached the room where i will building the studio. the room will be partitioned - live, and control room. any suggestions? Many Thanks guys...
is this the bigger 15x30 room?
unfortunately not. This is the 17 x 8 room (Garage room) I ordered some "Thermalite" blocks to cover up the garage door, and plaster the walls. After this i will have 4 solid walls with a door leading to the room itself. I shall then partition it so it looks like : <img src="http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/files/studio_design_904.jpg">

you might consider opting for a door with a window to consolidate the window and door into a single unit, opening into the live room. this way you can put the monitors on either side.
