I have a 10'x32'x18' space that I want to cram a studio into. I also need to include a small bathroom and a staircase to the upstairs bonus room. I want to have single combined live room and control room to maximize the space so theres more room for a band.
There will be a 3 car garage on the other side of the studio wall. I dont have to worry about trying to isolate the studio from the upstairs room, they wont be used at the same time. My house will be next door, so some decent soundproofing will be necessary, but its not a big issue. And there are no neighbors to worry about.
I found a layout John did for another poster and modified it to suit my room and my needs. Im just wondering if it will be acoustically viable, or will the weird shape behind the mixing position ruin the stereo imaging or create terrible modes.
I can modify the dimensions of the room (I havent built it yet) if necessary, so thats on the table.
Thanks for your help!

Will something like this work?

Might wanna resize that picture to less then 700px Width. Scrolling is a pain. 8)

Thanks for the tip Sigert.
By the way, the bathroom is under the stairs, next to the vocal booth.
Aloha and welcome to the forum,
Any chance you could post your skp file?

Hi Kendale,
I just tried to upload it, but it didnt work. The file is about 4 megs, and its still about 2 megs zipped. I just saw that the upload limit is 500K. Is there trick that im missing?
Thanks,
Byra
Aloha,
Try this:
In your skp file:
click on the "window" tab in the tool bar.
click on "model info"
click on "statistics"
click on "purged unused"
If it's still too big, try:
click on "view"
click on "face style"
click on "monochrome"
If, after all of that it's still too big, PM me and Ill give you my email and you can send it that way.
Aloha 8)
Thanks for the tips Kendale. I deleted some stuff and managed to get it small enough to post.

Aloha,
Got it! Be back in a few...:D

This one does have a separate CR and LR, and the LR is big enough for a band. Actually, this one is closer to the original design that John posted for someone else.
Do you think that the odd shaped live room will present any acoustic problems? I guess ill have to add some inside walls to the left and right sides of the LR so that they arent parallel. I like having the staircase open and exposed. It gives the room more volume than if it were walled up.
Aloha,
That's along the lines of what I was thinking, as you do have enough room for both. :D Depending on your isolation needs, you may want to reconsider the design of the wall facing the live room, though. I'll try to finish up a quick skp and post.

Aloha,
In Rod Gervais’ book “Build it Like the Pros,” http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 he points out both L.W.Sepmeyer’s & M.M. Louden’s formulas most widely used in professional studios worldwide. He also notes that the orders listed are (top to bottom) the first to third best ratios in both cases.
L.W. Sepmeyer
Height Width Length
1.00 1.14 1.39 9’11” x 11’3” x 13’8”
1.00 1.28 1.54
1.00 1.60 2.33
M.M. Louden
Height Width Length
1.00 1.40 1.90
1.00 1.30 1.90
1.00 1.50 2.10
Here's a quick skp. and a couple of ideas:
- If you were to flip the control room, you could use the hallway as a vocal booth
- viewing windows between above mentioned vocal booth and control room/live room
Hope this helps,

Thats a great idea about using the entry as the vocal booth! That way I dont waste that space and can either keep the other booth so I have 2 or else I could make the bathroom bigger.
Do you think having the opening for the stairs to the 2nd floor will create problems with the acoustics in the live room?
Thanks!
Aloha,
That may depend on how much bass build up there is and at what frequency. You may also want to consider treating the live room walls, ceiling and corners with various broadband absorbers (preferably NOT the "garden variety" foam products on the market), cloud absorbers and bass traps to control flutter and bass build up. Another thought to consider is "How much isolation will you have between the live room and the rest of your home?" as a single door at the top of the stairs will probably not be enough to keep from disturbing the rest of your household.
