...and I'm being told that it CAN'T be moved! It's a 2" PVC running from my bathroom below, vertically through the 2x6 base plate (staggered stud wall) up through the top plate into the attic. For whatever reason, it must stay. I don't know why, but my father-in-law/contractor assures me it must. Any ideas to minimize the damage? :cry:

I guess I should mention that the addition that we're putting up is all studs and bare lumber right now. We're now in the plumbing phase, obviously.

Seems like you're describing a drain vent pipe - and he's right that its location may very well not be movable, or if it is, not movable by far.
Mason Industries sells decoupling sleeves for these types of penetrations.
