First post. Hello, everyone. I am not currently doing any construction. I am merely placing my monitors and listening position, and I may add some absorbtion to minimize early reflections. I will add more detail if necessary, but this is a very vague question. It is a small, rectangular room, but it effectively has NO front wall, in that it opens up into another, larger, room. Should I still abide by the 38% rule, where the best listening position is 38% into the length of the room? Thank you, and I'm sorry if this has been covered before! Tim Walsh http://bouncetodisk.com
could you post a simple drawing of the rooms? it may be best to put the monitors on the closed end of the room with some basic absorber treatments and let the other room act as a bass trap - maybe something to decouple the spaces to make it more effective like a wooden "shoji" screen....

thank you so much! of course, i read the rules AFTER my post, so i didn't have any drawings prepared. i will prepare something and add it soon. i really appreciate the response. great drawing. tw
here's a sketchup of the room. the wood panel wall has no insulation behind it...there's drywall on the other side. the ceiling is drywall with no insulation. the concrete walls have a plastic covering that is part of the french drain system to keep it dry. how bad is this asymmetry in the materials? i also attached a first draft of gulfo's suggestion, without the screen. would this be a good way to proceed, or should i build walls? (these are my first two sketchups, forgive their crudeness) thanks again! tw

you could measure the space - try the room eq wizard. next listen to the wood wall - does it vibrate? buzz? maybe you need to line the back of it with insulation (if possible). otherwise, with the basic absorbers you've drawn, maybe a small carpet if the concrete is too live, you should be off to a decent start - re-measure after setting it up. if its still not meeting your needs, then maybe you need to consider some other work to correct it - the decoupling screen w/ absorbers, additional walls, etc...
