I'm planning to build a vocal booth in my basement cellar in Sept. I mainly produce Hip Hop music so I prefer very DEAD vocals (not dull of course). I need to build walls to make the room nonparallel and was thinking of just building straight down from the pipes from the ceiling and making those bass traps.
Also since the very low ceiling I need to fill that with 703? or can I just use the pink stuff (thats whats there right now)
When making the bass traps is it ok to use the pink insulation to save money?

you could build a pair of slats in the corners for bass trapping using the pink insulation. you could frame out the rest of the room and cover the insulation with cloth, and later if you need additional trapping or room corrections, you can add slats. on th ceiling, i'd put in a number of 2" 703 clouds since you're ceiling height is already really low.
gullfo: Thanks a for the reply.
Wouldn't the 2 parallel walls create standing waves? (Maybe I should angle thoughs in a bit) and Also, I'm very concerned with the ceiling height though, its REALLY low so i dont think ill be putting anything on there. As of right now I have the pink insulation is that not good enough? or should that have 703 in it?
the 2 side walls could, but i'd make them fairly open slats as part of the treatment and avoid flutter echos... :-)
Well, I prefer my booth to be as DEAD as possible. If I didn't put the slats on the side wouldn't the insulation absorb them?
I'm starting this project today so I will be posting pictures soon... I'm going to be angling the walls on the sides and not putting slats on them though
I'm having trouble nailing the 2x4s to the concrete in the room. I got the fluted masonry nails but then just bust out the concrete and then I can pull the 2x4 up.
Whats the work around for this, I was thinking getting plugs so I can screw the wood in?
use a nail gun (powder or pneumatic type) to mount brackets to the wall. then attach the 2x4 to those. or drill using a masonry drill and use anchors and screws or nails to attach the bracket. use brackets top and bottom about 4' oc or minimum 1 pair per wall. (you can get all this at home depot or lowes, rent the nail gun or buy the masonry bit - a bit smaller than the anchors)
re: absorber/slat q: if you leave the slats off they'll be aborbers...
I bought one of those Ramset impact guns worked perfectly!
