you could put a layer of rubber or other heavy damping material, add a layer of 29/32 t&g subfloor, and then 3/4 flooring on that. not likely to resonate much as you're not leaving a space there. plus that brings the floor up almost 2 inches so conceptually you could set the door bottoms flush or nearly flush. walls would get isolated from new subfloor as well. obviously check structure to determine ability to add this new material...
Ok, so finally we've got everything squared away with the owners and we will be signing the lease in the next few days. Thanks for all you help so far Glenn. I feel like we're probably gonna need a lot more. I haven't been able to find any info on installing sliding doors for the best possible isolation. Are they any good threads that exist as they do for standard doors? Any suggestions on building the frame? Should I just have the door sit directly on my bottom plate or do I need to put some kind of material in between? Once we get going I plan on posting pics as well as some test data once everything is in place. When searching about sliding glass doors the question of how much isolation can be achieved seems to be recurring so I plan on posting our results once the project is complete. I'd like to do whatever I can to give back for the help we have received. Also I see mixed results on whether to float the wall frames from the slab. I know you suggested it. With the door being my most likely weak point do you think it would be worth it to float the walls or would it not make sense in my particular scenario. What do you think the real world difference would be as far as isolation factor.
Oh yea I forgot to mention we won't have to perform any nonsense with the floor. We will just be pulling up what we need to put in the new walls and will use the existing floor that is on top of the slab. I'm hoping we can get it close enough so that when we apply the molding on the bottom of the wall it will look proper. I'm really pleased about this as the flooring in there is really nice.
