I've got the same question! I've seen similar acrylic or plastic sheeting that is meant to be used as roofing for sheds or carport type structures. These panels are somewhat flexible - so I envisioned them fastened to a wall panel at the edges and bowing out in the middle to form convex arcs along the sides of a room. It's Relatively cheap and comes in many colors including clear & tinted. Would be an inexpensive and "space-age" looking fix if they were usable. ... per usual, I have absolutely no physics or test #s to back this up. Here's a link to something similar: http://www.kemlite.com/sequentia_corrugated/poly300.cfm
I've seen something similar used. But the ones I saw were (as often) lightweight and become a panel absorber in itself with a clear resonance range. Such kind of diffusers should be stable. For labs as rule of thumb a minimum of 5 kg/m2 is described (better more). I know a lot of diffusers will not comply with this rule of thumb, but I also believe a lot of commercial related stuff will show side-effects not described by the seller. And it also depends on shape and so on.
