Multi purpose recording/rehearsal room......comments/suggestions needed.
Original plans (a few years ago) to build a control room and booth were scrapped for various reasons. Since that time the room has served us well and produced some reasonably good recordings, etc. Recently, I had reason to totally gut the room and as I'm rebuilding the inner timber wall, I'm thinking about positioning the studio gear, etc., to create a more open feel to the room.
While I realise it's not the ideal setup, past experience has shown that with care, I can produce more than satisfactory results, relying on a variable frequency Helmholtz Resonator set into one wall and a number of mobile gobos which are absorbative on one side and reflective on the other. In the attached plan, the blue dotted line is where I had the console, effects rack and R2R set up and the black dotted line is my prefered postion as I re-establish things.
Any advice for positioning acoustic treatment to compensate for this odd layout would be greatly appreciated.

Multi purpose recording/rehearsal room......

you could turn the (future) console position to face the top wall so the listening position is along the long axis. then treat the corners of the room with trapping and a cloud over the mix position. you might consider some diffusion on the bottom (far) wall since you have some distance. if you wanted to go further with some construction you could divide the space up and get a tracking room and isobooth...
Gullfo,
I have been looking at the option of positioning the console centred at the (top) back wall but it creates "issues" fitting the effects rack, R2R recorder and other gear in conveniently which is why I keep returning to the layout I've proposed, which while not acoustically ideal, is the most workable layout for our needs.
Oddly enough, your suggested layout for a booth and control room is very close to the original plan for the room which we scrapped a few years ago........family things changed and dictated that the intention of bringing in outside work was no longer feasible so the studio is just for our private use.
You may get a slightly better idea of what I'm dealing with here..... http://www.recordingproject.com/bbs/vie ... 484#433484
