Hi Rod, I split this from my other thread as i am now nearly (sorta) complete ! I am looking at your super door design and although I can't make it exactly like yours, because i can't find the lead, this is what i can do. Solid core door, layer of green glue(?), 3/4" MDF, 1/4 in ply finish. [/b]Question In your book you say the inner face of the door has the extra bits. Can it be reversed ?? Ie I want my door to close from the inside of the room towards the outside. Is the inner face way critical for the design ? I have sorted a drop down bottom seal. But what of the actual door seal ?? Are you recommending an professional adjustable acoustic seal or are you saying just put trunk rubber on the inner jamb part ?? Will the green glue idea work ?? Rod, thanx again for your time :) Cheers N Y M O
Nymo, 1st - you must have a home depot on the coast...... they sell rolled lead in 18" wide sheets - which you can use side by each to get the job done. 2nd - I thin the addition of green glue can only enhance the isolating value of the door. 3rd - I am not crazy about the idea of a 1/4" door facing - you would be much better off with a finished faced piece of 3/4" 4th - I m a bit confused by your termonoology - the inner face of a door is always the face that colses to you - it has nothing to do with what room you are standing in. If the door opens into the control room - then the inner face (the face not flush with the room finish) is in the space outside the control room. ytou have a drawing in the book that shows exactly what you have to do - just follow it - obviously you can't do that in the control room if that is the flush side of the door. you aren't building a diode here - the isolation is exactly the same from both sides...... it doesn't matter how the door opens......... I do not understand when you say this:

PLease explain better what you mean....... Rod
hi Rod, Thanx for your reply. If you could please have a look at these seals http://www.raven.com.au/domino/raven/ra ... catalogue2 (unfortunately it can't go directly to the page) If you go to Sealing Systems > Noise > 3rd one heavy duty and also med duty. Ok...I know I need to buy the RP 70 or the RP 8 bottom door seals. But do i have to buy the corresponding door frame seals or do i just use the trunk rubber as you specify instead ?? BTW I priced the lead you suggested at our home depot (Bunnings) and a roll of 24 inW x 10 ft L x 6 pound was $444 Australian $367 US is just WAY too much !.. and I'd need two of them !! Cheers N Y M O

I would reccomend the RP-38..........

Use the trunk rubber and magnetic weatherstripping.

Sorry - but your math must be off a bit - one roll of 24" x10' does a 30x68 door complete. Sincerely, Rod
hi Rod, Thanx for your reply. I will look into the RP 38. Sorry about my maths being wrong...its always hard to convert metric to imperial in my head all the time when I'm talking to you guys  I still think the lead is bloody expensive ! Cheers N Y M O

Nymo, when you think about the aount of mass you are adding in 1/8" it isn't all that bad. I know that around 800 (US Dollars) is what these doors cost me to construct - compare that to 2 to 3 grand for a door provided by a company like Overly and I don't think it's too much money. Rod
Hi Rod, Thanx for your reply. Still looking for some *k trunk rubber* ! I have lent your book to the guy doing the door...so..how do you attach the trunk rubber to the frame (glue I presume) ?? What is the approx density and size of that rubber..i am going to see a Holden (GMH) Dealer tomorrow :) Cheers N Y M O

Nymo, I usually staple the rubber and then install my trim - but it's the trim itself that locks it all into place - look at figure 5.6. You can buy the trunk rubber through the J.C. Whitney company........ http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Prod ... 23/c-10101 you will have to contact them to physically order the specific GM type . Rod
Hi Rod, I am having difficulty finding the right type of trunk seal(without having to import it from the US) and I am starting to look at commercial seals. Could you please have a look at the 20-24 seal at tell me if its ok ?? It has a stc rating of 47. http://www.doorseals.com.au/catpages/DS ... ogue28.jpg Cheers N Y M O

NYMO, I can't believe this - you must have dealers who sell GM cars where you are... any of the GM rubbers that are shaped lke my attached sketch will work perfectly. Or - import it from the US.

I have never done business wth ths company........ I wouldn't have a cle bout the quality of their products,,,,,,
It has a stc rating of 47.
Which is (in and of itself) a joke - the single piece means nothing - it's the entire assembly that matters......... Listen - if you want to make a new set up - be my guest - but don't ask me how it will perform - I can ony speak to what I have worked out that was sucessful.......... Rod
