Is there an ideal ration to room dimensions for sound? If one wall is going to measure at 8 feet (interior length) what should the proportions around that wall be to be the best for acoustic quality. This is all assuming that it is staggered studs with two layers 5/8" drywall (gypsum) inner wall and two layers outer wall (insulated deadspace), sealed and all the other buzzers and whistles.
Along the lines of the magic ratios, IF I decided to go with staggered studs, insulation, and 2 layers of drywall on one side and only 1 on the other: 1. Is that going to cause more trouble than the money saving is worth? 2. Which side inside or outside should the double wall be on?

Paul, Just for the fun of it, since with this small length there isn't much room to speak about ideal ratios. I only made them to give you a feel of what such room ratios are all about. But as you further will see this ratio approach hardly applies in the situation you described. Just theoretically and assuming your height is equal or smaller than this 8 feet wall. (L > W > H) The start number of the x and y axis is the related room height. You see this becomes low, no? I hope you're a small guy otherwise you're going to hurt your head. I chose 2 of > 20 room ratios respecting pseudo acceptable room height as much as possible. For room Option 1: As per EBU (in addition to mentioned Room ratio) With Length & Height AS IS, choose 'Width' between: 6' 10 11/16" - 7' 3 5/16" With Length & Width AS IS, choose 'Height' between: 2' 9 11/16" - 3' 1 3/8" or 3' 5 1/2" - 3' 9 9/16" or 4' 2 9/16" - 5' 4 9/16" For Room Option 2 As per EBU (in addition to mentioned Room ratio) With Height & Width AS IS, choose 'Length' between: 7' 3 3/4" - 9' 1 5/8" With Length & Height AS IS, choose 'Width' between: 6' 4 11/16" - 7' 3 1/4" With Length & Width AS IS, choose 'Height' between: 2' 9 11/16" - 3' 1 7/8" or 3' 6" - 3' 9 9/16" or 4' 2 1/2" - 5' 5 11/16" :) I repeat: This is just for the fun of it. You must control sound and flutter in such a small room as traditionally described here in the forum. Normally your length is the largest measure, width second largest and height smallest. Standard one should expect to have minimum about 8' for the height, which is the smallest measure in a standard room ratio approach. You suggest 8' for the largest of the 3 measures. If you should have an exception high ceiling, one could switch these measures upside down. Note: That one measure is 1/16 smaller than 8' is is that my program iterates, giving priority to maintaing the exact ratio, and rounds to the nearest 1/16". Can also set this to 1/4 and 1/8

Thanks Eric! With these ratios, I can play with other sizes as well. Far more than I can digest right now, but I'll fish around the forum and internet and 'edumacate' myself some more. This site is awesome for information. Thanks for being kind to newbies.
