Can a soundlock double as a vocal booth? I have made a sound lock roughly 1 meter by 1 meter by 1 meter and 2.4 meters high imperial?? Eh…. 3 foot square by eh…. 6 foot something?. I made it when I believed that it was better to have a larger sound barrier between the doors. Anyway I am thinking if I made the area as dead as possible, would it suffice as a vocal booth? I have a very large voice and I have noticed that when I have recorded in other peoples studious eh….(normal sized rooms really) we get a large reflection when I let my voice rip with condenser mikes which leave unwanted echoes in the recordings. Any comments would be really appreciated. :D
There is a room at Masterfonics in Nashville that does this very thing. Jewel recorded some of her stuff there. The trick was how the room was trapped. I think the actuall ceiling in that space was 15' and it was full of rockwool. What you have to watch with a small room is modal buildup, especially if tou have a big voice. Masterfonics booth used two sets of sliding doors to separate it and the singer would sing sidways in order to avoid more reflections off the glass of the doors. Really a slick design in many ways. -ashley
