I have a pair of alesis M1 monitors, they sound great, how important is eq-ing the room with a 31 band eg?

Generally it's a bad idea....
That said, first, try to use acoustic solutions to solve any uneveness in your room response. And then, after you've exhauseted your options or budget, then you might consider using an EQ (and a graphic is not the best for it) set to cut only to correct for low frequency issues that might be related to speaker boundary interface issues.
I say cut only because there's no amout of boost that will copensate for a null in a rooms modal response...it will only eat up headroom and cause distortion somewhere else.
