You know an engineer can wait nearly his entire career to have an empty wide open space to build and design his dream facility. Well that is until you get there and you find your self with so many ideas, that it overwhelms. The easy anwser is to simply hire a noted designer, explain needs and wants and budget. However i do not have that luxury. I have a 50' x 80' x 12' clear span steel building. My brain is fried! i know in the rules that i can not post a topic that states "this is my building size, what do i do?" I hope that this does not break that rule! My goal is to have a large studio A, that is capable of both music production as well as video/film (5.1 now, 7.1 future). The planned console is a modified Neve VR 96 (16' wide) not winged. The other goal here is a large main room, large enough for an Orchestra Studio B is just that, simple voice overs etc... some office space, lounge etc... it all sounds easy!!!! any idea's? Thanks Joel
After some reading here i realized that i was very vague in my description of the space, budget etc... SPACE: 50' x 80' x 12' open span metal building with a solid slab floor. It is a new building, there is nothing pre determend, not even a kitchen sink! the building will be built to spec to support the design(doors, windows, etc) think of it as a blank 50' x 80' space. LOCATION: Just south of St. loius, MO will have forest on three sides! The nearest neighbor is 1000 feet away, my only noise issue will be rain on the metal roof. Would like the main room in studio A to make use of the beatiful views in the location. BUDGET: 50K USD on the Interior (will be doing 98% of the building myself along with freind, relatives, etc) Hope that helps define it thanks again Joel
Well... i will post my idea's on here, over the next cuople of days using sketchup, maybe that will generate some feed back... Joel
Ok here is a basic idea of what I am envisioning for studio A I have not got proficient enough with sketch up yet, so I used CAD and imported into skecthup, for forgive the crudeness of the design and image. The file did not keep the dimensions when imported into sketchup so, here they are. The main studio is 50' from top to bottom, and 30' wide (the control room and iso's extend into the main studio) The control room is 20' from front to back. The back wall is 20' wide; the wall in front of the console is 19' wide. The Neve's foot print is 16' wide and 51" deep. The console represented is in scale in the room. ISO 1 (located by main entrance into control room) is roughly 10' by 7' Machine room/utility is roughly 5' 6" by 9' ISO 2 is roughly 11' 6" by 17' There will be three sliding glass doors in the main room leading out to a deck. Everything you see can be changed/moved even the sliding glass doors. The only thing that can not be changed is the overall width and depth 50' x 40' space for studio A. I hope this helps! Or at least hope some one is interested in helping me... Either way, thank you! And have a good weekend! Joel

I am looking for a live/warm sound in the main room. Think of it as a well controlled chruch or theatre. I will have movable walls to change the acoustics when needed. thank again for any assitance. Joel
Here is another idea using sketchup

and here is another idea, is any one goin to respond? just curious, if i am not welcome here, just let me know.

I think v4 is the best so far, simple, clean, and spacious. The control room walls on the others are angled the wrong(i think?)way, it seems they would focus all early reflections towards you rather than away. have you seen the popular room ratios?
In Rod Gervais’ book “Build it Like the Pros,” (recommended) http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5670 he points out both L.W.Sepmeyer’s & M.M. Louden’s formulas most widely used in professional studios worldwide. He also notes that the orders listed are (top to bottom) the first to third best ratios in both cases. L.W. Sepmeyer Height Width Length 1.00 1.14 1.39 1.00 1.28 1.54 1.00 1.60 2.33 M.M. Louden Height Width Length 1.00 1.40 1.90 1.00 1.30 1.90 1.00 1.50 2.10
hope this helps
G-Raj- Thanks for the reply! The first too was just to show idea's the last one V4 seems to be the one i will use,,, just need to refine it. I will see were the ratios will work in the current design thanks!
you could try something like this. have a shared machine room. separate load-in for each studio. although depending on the building layout you may have to move some things around possible swap the load-in and reception spaces. maybe if you had a building plan with parking etc... it would help us more...

Gullfo- I would like to thank you for your reply and ideas. You have done a great job defining the space. does the main studio accomodate the large format console mentioned above? can you publish the demensions? Thank you again, sorry for such a late reply. Joel
here's the sketchup. it should - i think i sized the console in the jpg to be the width of yours. keeping in mind this is only an idea, things could be sized to make things fit but i was thinking here more along the lines of overall layout and workflow...
