Hello everyone, my name is Spanky and I live in Fort Worth, Texas. I have been reading here for about one year trying to learn as much as possible before I posted. I have reviewed the reference area several times along with numerous post relating to studio design but I am somewhat lost as to what would be the best design so, I am asking for help. Goals: I have a " makeshift" studio already but, it does not sound very good so, I want to begin with a clean sheet of paper to have the best sounding room I can given the small but only room I have for a control room. I play and record blues/blues rock and on occasion play pretty loud. My neighbors are cool but, my wife, as sweet as she is can sometimes be not so cool especially when watching a program on the tube so, I would like to keep the sound as well contained as possible to try and keep everyone happy. Budget: I would like to keep the cost as close to $2000.00 as possible - I will be doing all the work myself so, all money would be spent on materials. Building construction: my house is built using standard construction - concrete slab, 2x4 framing, sheetrock and brick veneer on the out side. The spare bedroom I will be using is an odd shaped room ( I am including a drawing with all dimesions scale is 1/2"=1'). The room is 10'-3 1/2" x 10' 11 1/2"on one side and the other wall is11'-2 3/4 x 8' ceiling. I have mackie HR 824 monitors that I would like to soffet mount if possible. I also would like to have windows to see into my live room which ajoins and into the vocal booth (closet). I hope I have included all the info I need to for proper evaluation and guidence from this forum. Thank you in advance for any help. Regards, Spanky54

could you post a bit of the overall house info such as style of house (I'm guessing its a ranch style) and other rooms - particularly the live room (entrance, windows, closet etc) and any where the boss (wife) would mostly like be impacted... :-) Q: could the vox booth be put into the other room? its a bit small as a closet... you could use that closet for storage and/or bass trapping in the CR.

Thanks for the reply Gullfo, I don't really know what style the house is but, here is a bit of info of the lay out. The whole house is open - the proposed live room, kitchen and living room share a vaulted ceiling with no real walls or doors - the master bed room has a door as does the spare bed room, 2nd bath and laundry room. On the drawing I posted the live room is in front of the wall that is 10'-11 1/2" - the kitchen is to the right of the control room and the living room is to the right of the kitchen - the only doors are on the far side of the 10' 11 1/2" wall and lead to a covered patio - one window on the same side as the door - the ceiling slopes up from 8' to 11'-6" I do not plan to totally enclose the live room because it would be a major task and not feasable nor could I put the vocal booth in the live room - I am pretty much stuck with the one room for the control room and vocal booth, even having a studio has been a major hassel because of the "boss"- as far as the "boss" goes, if I can contain sound to the control room it would enable me to mix later at night when she is in bed - I know this limits the design possibilities but that is the way it is unfortunitly - I usually track during the day when the wife is up and do my mixing at night after she has gone to bed. I keep my drum kit and all of my other instruments in the live room. Spanky
Gullfo, the design you came up with is great - I originally thought about that but really had no place for a vocal booth - I guess it COULD be in the live room although it will be a hassel - what is the smallest a vocal booth could be and still sound good? There are no doors/walls along that side Spanky
Anybody?
my last post didn't make it... you could try to expand the closet into a better booth and then treat the front of it to reduce reflections back to the mix console.

That is an option - I am wondering though is there no way to place the listening postion facing toward the live room and still achieve the symmetry needed? - that way I can see into both the live room and vocal booth. I had planned to splay the walls and make the vocal booth within the closet/splayed area. I know this makes the room smaller but, could it be done and still sound good? I can post actual photos of the room if that would help.I wish I had sketchup but, cannot afford it. Thank you very much for the help and any other info you can offer. Spanky
1.I posted my location 2.I did post dimensions and ask "what would be a good design" because although I had an idea of what to do I was unsure - I thought that was the purpose of this board- to ask for help with designs 3.I posted a drawing with all room info and pointed out windows, doors etc. 4.as far as I know, I did not post pics larger than 700px wide 5.I did explain what I wanted to do along with how loud I play and what kind of music - I posted what kind of monitors I have and how I wanted to mount them - I did not post what kind of recording set-up I have - what diference does that make? 6.I did post what kind of isolation is needed I have tried to follow the rules as best as I can but yet I have had only two replys both from gullfo - what am I doing wrong? I will gladly provide any addtional info if only I know what is needed Spanky

I do not think John was being sarcastic in his reply. However I do view yours as very unprofessional and unwarranted.
