Hey guys,
I took Knightfly's advice about angling my walls in my basement studio to help with flutter echo problems. Because of this, on one end of my studio (where my mixing desk will be) I have some extra space between my inner leaf and my outer leaf (which is poured concrete). The basement is mostly underground so at this point, I'm not concerned about isolation loss from the additional leaf. (it won't be the weakest point).
I want to use the space to make a cabinet/closet to store things like mic stands and cables when I'm not tracking. I will box out this space with 2 layers of 5/8" plywood to match the 2 layers of 5/8" drywall. It's not going to be big enough to walk in, so it's more like a cabinet set into the wall.
I'm looking for some ideas on what to do with the door to this thing....something that would look nice. I haven't found anything at lowes/home depot. Should I put some type of moulding around the area (glued to the drywall) and then some type of cabinet door? Or should I get some plexiglass that can slide up and down?
Just wondering if anyone has any cool ideas!? Thanks!
I need an idea for a cabinet/closet door

Hey Tom,
I bounced around with a similar idea to make a machine closet to stick computer in. I dropped the idea though because in my build I do not have the room to make it worth while. I believe are rooms are going to be really similar in shape... if my memory is correct, your splaying the walls to half way back in the room right? If you figure out something good please post. That space we loose from splaying walls is something a lot of posters would like to find use for.
Stick The Stickhouse Studio BUILD built a with door machine closet in the front corner of his CR.
I think John has a couple of designs posted on the design forum with some ideas but those posts will take some hunting to find.
My plan was to frame out for an opening similar to a door or window with header, cripple studs etc... BUT would work more like a scuttle hole/attic access door. Drywall everything but the hole and then cut 3/4 plywood (or part of an old solid wood door *if found* would be 1 3/4" thick) to fit. Apply seals as described in Rod's book for doors. Maybe add via green glue some drywall mass to the "closet door". Attach 2" rigid fiberglass to back of door. Cover exposed fiberglass and insulation between walls (in closet) with a fabric. Then use no hinges, but some latches like on a guitar case (but more heavy duty) to shut the door and press it into the seals.
Maybe hinges could work, maybe someone could think this through better then me BUT I gave up on it and main reason was this door would be to much in the way of acoustics like soffit wall or corner traps.
PLUS if use for a machine closet ventalation would be required.

Hey Marc!
Actually my walls will be angled the entire length of the studio. For me, the lost space wasn't much of a concern since it's a one room studio and the skinnier part of the room will be where the mixing desk is and the wide part where the drums will be. The cabinet just seems like a good idea for convenient storage in the "wasted" space.
I'm thinking of making the opening fit between 2 24" OC studs. and only maybe 2 feet tall. Then the cabinet will extend behind the other studs so I can slide mic stands in horizontally.
I also have to consider placement of acoustic materials (like for the first reflection points), but I think it should be OK if I keep the opening small and low.
My idea was to build it in such a way that I don't have to worry about isolation even with no door on the cabinet. So really I just want something that looks nice and that would cover up a small 2' X 2' opening.
